New Member - Hopefully buying 2400BH
Hi Everyone,
New member here! I am heading to a dealer tomorrow and am about 90% sold on buying a gently used 2016 Keystone Passport 2400BH. I have been stalking the camper over the entire Christmas break. Its hands down the lightest bunkhouse with a separated master bedroom that I can find!
I will be towing the camper with a 2016 GMC Canyon. I know it will be a bit tight, but the numbers are coming in less than 90% of capacity so I think it will be OK. That is the only piece causing hesitation right now. I have been on a bit of a spending spree as of late but, my wife is stoked and as they say... happy wife, happy life!!
Will report back on how she goes tomorrow. Looking forward to contributing!
Sean

Welcome to the forum from Radium Hot Springs BC.
Did not know the Canyon had that much towing capacity. Hope all goes well!

Thank you!! 66joej - yep - believe it or not, the Towing Capacity on a Canyon is 7000 lbs - 7600 if you have the diesel. They are incredibly robust trucks. Since the UVW for the 2400BH is 4730, I'm not really anticipating exceeding 5700. 1000 lbs is a lot of crap and I don't plan on carrying water...

Which engine do you have? You didn't say.
The numbers will be close but looks like you might stay under. To me, almost 7000 lbs behind a compact pickup is a lot but....... I think the combo will be hard pressed in mountainous terrain but the new engines are getting more and more powerful. Good luck if you make the leap.

Hi Sourdough,
I have the V6 - so, 305 HP / 269 ft/lb tq. It would have been great to have the 369 ft/lb from the little diesel but I just couldn't justify the extra $4k.
I figured I would struggle in the mountains. But, fortunately, 90% of my camping will be in Wisconsin which is just acres upon acres of flat farmland
I am planning (expecting) that a decent Wt distributing hitch with sway control and a good brake controller will help keep things in check.

Welcome to the forum from Southern MD. Enjoy your new rig. I met someone last year with a similar TV and TT and he said it towed great. Keep an eye on your TV's CGWR.

Hi Tbos, that's good to hear!! I have "met" quite a few people on the Canyon/Colorado forums which are also towing similar setups. One guy even has the 2400BH. Yeah, I've been crunching numbers pretty hard lately just to be sure. The CGWR of the truck is 12,000 lb - so I'm keeping a close eye!
We shall see how it looks tomorrow!

Welcome to the forum, skane.
As with most pickups, including 1 tons, you rarely exceed the towing capacity before you exceed the payload capacity. That's a marketing trick used by the manufacturers. What does the yellow sticker on your drivers door say for cargo carrying capacity?
If you aren't sure about the numbers for your Canyon, the best way to get some real numbers on your available payload capacity is to take the truck to a CAT scale and weigh it with a full tank of fuel and everyone on board. Since you're looking at a bunkhouse model you must have some kids to take along, too - don't forget they'll be growing. Don't forget to account for an extra 75-100# for the WDH. A actual weigh in will account for any accessories you have installed like a tonneau cover, running boards, etc.
The GVWR less (the actual weight, plus 100#) will tell you what you have left in payload capacity for the Passport's tongue weight and anything you want to put in the truck bed.
You're right to assume about an extra 1000# once the trailer is fully loaded. Assuming the 4730# is the actual UVW on the sticker on the trailer, you're right to figure about 5700#. Use 12% of that (685#) for the anticipated tongue weight.
If you're close on the numbers but you're comfortable with the available power, you can upgrade the Canyon by adding LT tires and better suspension to make the ride more stable, but that will not increase your GVWR.
We've all been there doing this calculation. Hope it works out for you.
