2007 289bhs cougar tire options

looking at replacing tires after recent blow outs.

6 lug wheels
225/75D/15D 65psi factory
225/75/15 80psi currently.

wondering if going to 16" would fit and give more options.

i want to be able to drive 65mph and travel hours away. i dont think current 15" wheels would support 100psi+

thoughts?

If your Cougar, like mine, had LRD tires fitted, then LRE at 15" is OK. You likely have 5 lug rims so staying with those rims would be your most economical option; you can probably buy and fit 16" rims but why bother? I use Carlisle Radia HD Trail ST225R15 LRE on my Cougar and have good luck with them.

wondering if going to 16" would fit and give more options. What size tire? 16" is a rim size, the tire size/ratio will determin outside diameter.

i want to be able to drive 65mph and travel hours away. A 225/75/15 in anm E rated tire will do that. i dont think current 15" wheels would support 100psi+ Don't know what your current rims are but most likely not.

thoughts?
Typically most folks go from say a "D rating" tire that was OEM to a "E rating" replacement tire. I to have gone "up one rating" from a 225/75/15 D to a 225/75/15 E with Carlisle Radial; Trail HDs without issue.

sorry
6 lug wheels.

E rated tires

i wasnt sure if 16" wheels gave better tire options on makes and stuff like truck tires- for weight and speed ratings-

Many 16" tire/wheel assemblies simply won't fit in the wheelwell space on a trailer that old. Your trailer was built and equipped with bias ply tires. Right now, your posts don't differentiate bias ply from radial tires... They aren't the same and certainly aren't interchangeable unless all 4 are the same construction....

So, back to basics, do you intend to upgrade to ST radial tires? do you have the wheelwell clearance to fit 16" radial tires on that trailer? There are "6 lug 16" wheels available, but when tires are mounted on them, will they rub the wheelwells? If they do, you'll destroy your trailer's "plywood/vinyl tarp" wheelwell structure with the larger option. In that case, you're pretty much restricted to the 6 lug 5" wheel with ST225 75R15 LRE, LRF or LRG tires.....

With 16" rims you can go up to LRH but there is little to be gained as far as safety and value. Your money, It might be a good time to upgrade to some fancy chrome wheels that are rated for whatever you decide; remember that new hubs/brakes, etc. will be needed for the 16" rims.

Carlisle Radial HD ST225/75R15 LRE

Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15 LRE
Maxxis M8008 ST225/75R15 LRE (10 ply)

There are likely others that are mentioned a lot less that those above but the ones above have quite a few proponents and are generally considered tops in the 15" range. The Carlisle brand has the best bang for your buck; buy mine at Walmart online and have them shipped to house then drag my camper to an independent tire shop for install.

If you look you might be able to find a 15” LT tire (Light Truck) with enough weight capacity to cover the axle weight on your Cougar. It looks like it has a GVWR of 10,400# so about 9,000# or less on the axles. Otherwise look at 16” wheels and tires, we run LT 235/85-16 Yokohama tire on our 12,360# GVWR 5er, yes, lower weight capacity than the same size ST tire rating, but a speed rating of 106 mph! So towing the 5er even close to GVWR I have total tire capacity of 12,168#, I carry about 10,000# on the axle.
