FYI on using the table for a bed.

Hi all, we have a 2016 Passport 217EXP. So far, nothing wrong with one exception.
I converted the table to a bed as it is advertised to be able to do so. It really worked very well for my 215 lb. 6'3" frame. BUT, as I was sitting on the edge of it, close to the head end of it, the staples pulled away on the small wooden rail that supports it and down I went.

I write this to give warning to those who plan on using the table as a bed. It was a very easy fix with grinding the staple legs off that were now exposed and then securing with screws. I added screws on the remaining 2 supports also.

One may want to throw a few screws in before something like this happens as it could be a safety issue with a guest if not just somewhat embarrassing.

Wife and I really like this RV, lots of floor space and three 60 by 80 inch beds for the grandkids when they visit.

I had not thought about that. A few nuts, bolts, and washers or good wood screws may be in order before we use the dinette as a bed.

I agree that the wooden rail is not secured well enough. Before I let anyone make the dinette into a bed, I added screws to the rails. I also made a set of short legs to replace the metal legs when the table is in the bed position. I do not trust the table top to hold 200 pounds+, and certainly didn't want to have to hunt down a new table once this table snapped.

Always try to sit on the bench seating area and not the center of the table, I've seen them break!

Because of weight considerations, most tabletops are made of 1/2" or 5/8" particle board and laminated with the "cheapest" laminate available. As such, I'm really surprised that more people haven't had broken or cracked tabletops. The bench supports "should" hold the tabletop without breaking away from the bench. Gluing and screwing them in place will resolve that problem, but if it only moves the "weakest link" from the support to the center of the tabletop, it will probably mean a more expensive repair. Using "homemade" supports when the tabletop is in the bed position is a great idea, especially if anyone heavier than a preschooler is going to use the bed.

Short legs made of p.v.c. here too, plus a 5 gallon bucket in the middle, close to outside edge to keep it from tipping!

Both are great ideas, the bucket sounds like a nice easy button idea, maybe use some towels under and on top to snug up and just put right in the middle. I will do my experimenting on that one.

Re: FYI on using the table for a bed.

The couch is much more comfortable. Plus, you want the extra room, fold it down and make it a bed. When we were in Assateague last year a nasty storm rolled in and two of my youngest daughters ran to us in the front bed bunk,.... no way,... opened the couch and they were better there. My other daughter slept right thru it.

I agree with the added supports though under the table top. Our popup developed a slight curve in the top after my daughter was sleeping on it all season. I made supports to help it, but the curve was already set. Now the 217 solves that problem, plenty of sleeping area.

Re: FYI on using the table for a bed.

The table top is only particle board, we will only use it as a bed for the grand children, I will never try to get my fat butt on it, thats why we have a bed.
