I40 Albuquerque to Oklahoma City
Will be traveling from Albuquerque NM to Oklahoma City OK soon, would rather not repeat I70 experience. Can anyone tell me what the road conditions are like? Thank you!

Big climb getting out of Albuquerque going east. After that it’s a nice ride as I remember.

Other than LOTS trucks it's probably as good as any other stretch of interstate.

Of all the east-west interstates we travel, I-40 is the preferred route. No extreme altitudes and seldom any high wind conditions. Not much in the way of winter weather conditions either, especially compared to I-80.

That stretch of I40 is good. Lots of traffic and trucks generally. Not much there and the scenery is....ummmm, well the scenery is just FLAT and can be flat boring. Of course if you've got time to kill might take a side trip out of Santa Rosa and run down to Ft. Sumner to see Billy the Kid's grave and the museum if that interests you, or, time it right to stop in at the Big Texan in Amarillo and try your hand at the free 72 oz. steak (gotta eat it all). After that there's a leaning water tower in McClean IIRC . LOTS of stuff.. but it is a good highway.

We stop at The Big Texan every chance we get. And NO, not gonna try to eat that 72 oz. steak! We did get to watch a few try though! Be sure to shut your A/C off before you get to Wildorado though! Stockyards! Ugh!!!

New Mexico I - 4 - 0....
thast stretch was always one of my favs, gear jammin or a tourist.
From ABQ you got a heck of a pull going east....then its up and down to tucumcari on a slow bleed downhill, then down to amarillo.
from either side, but mostly from the east going west, approaching amarillo was always my fav...back in the day when it was not so built up and you see it for 30-45 mins before you get there
I 4th the big texan
since that road caters to the big rigs, all the pilots/fly js and TAs are your friend to get into and out of. from east of amarillo to OKC, its kinda boring. I prefer it in the dark...
btw, after the heat of summer, the asphalt NM roads tend to wagon wheel rut from the gooeyness they get and the truck traffic. This time of year they tend to reflatten them out. the trailer WILL feel weird if you drive thru the 'ruts'

Molly Schuyler, weighing in at 124 pounds, ate three 72 oz. steaks in 20 minutes flat and is still the record holder.
Pretty amazing.

ABQ to OKC on I-40 is mostly a good road....lots and lots of wind turbines to see if you are into seeing thousands of them. If you go on past OKC, the road turns kind of bad. I was just through there last week on our way back from Moab and yep, it's kind of boring, but you can make good time.

It’s been 2 or 3 years ago since we’ve drove that way, but best I remember the road was good to Amarillo. From there we went south.
If you get a chance and want to stretch your legs, there is a RV museum in Amarillo, and Cadillac Ranch, too.

We've made two trips to Albuquerque - same route from here: Up to Clovis, over to Ft Sumner, north to Santa Rosa then west to Alb. Return same route. I-40 is under construction in places, sometimes there is a huge - like 10~15 mile - backup. Most of the road is OK, was able to run 70 with our big 34' race trailer. But lots of places, it sucks bad - rough, pot holes/missing surface, etc. I-20 down here in places is as bad or worse. Muleshoe to Santa Rosa is off and on crap. The interstate highway system IMHO is suffering. Last trip we were running 17,000 with an empty trailer and hit places on both I-40 and I-20 that literally bounced the rig into the other lane.

I dragged my fifth wheel I-40 Santa Rosa to Memphis in August. It was
the best stretch of freeway our entire trip 5119.6 miles Taos NM to Atlanta then north to Hyde Park NY then back home on I-70. I had my parents with me and my mom loves to read on long drives. Once we left I-40 the road was so bad she didn't read another word the rest of the trip.
Through Kansas the road caused "death wobble" 3 times over a 100 mile stretch!! Fun!!
