I had a buddy with an old Newmar London-Aire fifth wheel from around 1987. His kingpin was about 2 feet behind the front of the nose cap. NO WAY in the world to tow that trailer with anything less than an 8' bed.

Here's a link to the brochure for that year. You can see an old photo of their fifth wheels about page 5 or 6: https://newmar.imgix.net/wp-content/...ondon-aire.pdf

Also, take a look at the "improvement" in advertising from "back when" and today's "sell to the innocents who don't know any better"...

Aw heck, I was hoping to see a Newmar 5th wheel with duallies. I think that's who made it. Saw it in a RV park in Tennessee. Walked around it a dozen times.

No dual wheels on his trailer. It was about a 35' tandem axle unit. It only had about 12K GVW, but man that thing towed heavy and seemed HUGE !!! He towed it with a 85 or 86 Ford dually with a 460. Thinking back, I think I remember a "kissed area" just over his truck rear window, but I'm not sure about that. He did talk about putting a 10' bed on his truck so he had enough room to turn without worrying about hitting the cab.
