Propane leaking

So today I turned on the propane and it started to leak very fast. It was coming out of a small hole (I assume a pressure release hole) in the RED valve that the flexible hose connects to from the tank. It was simple enough to change, only 15 dollars at Giant RV and had to get some yellow LP gas tape for the threads. Now can anyone tell me why this leaked, I'm seriously asking as I don't know. It's fixed, but would really like to know why.

Did you turn on the propane "fast"? I've seen it a couple of times where a person turned on the propane real fast and the regulator started "venting". Turned back off and opened slowly and all was good.

Good question as it's really not suppose to do this.

No, I've familiar with the process for a long time, and keep minding myself just that. Always slowly turn on the gas. I had just finished the one on the driver side when I walked over to turn the passenger side on, when it started to vent. Turned it off and slowly back on, same thing, for several times. The guy behind the counter at Giant RV, could not tell me why it did it. Said they don't sell many. Guess I was just lucky to have a bad one during check out and not on the road, or in camp somewhere. I know I still could use the opposite tank, but still the question remains.

ummmm, things break. That's the only explanation I can give. Not sure how the item is made/designed, but I assume it has a check valve/spring inside. Can't give a reason why, but these items can fail.

Yosemitebob, Howdy;

Are you referring to the high press (30psi), regulator on the driver's side of
the trailer?
I had to replace mine a few years ago. As mine was a sealed unit I didn't
bother to tear it apart to see what the problem was. Now with a 125 gal.
tank hooked to my RV the Propane Co. removed my regulator and have one
of their's as part of the tank set-up. So, in the future there is another place
to look fro replacement parts for your gas system, probably a bit less
expensive as well and the techs are most likely "certified" instead of just counter help.
