New mattress or just a topper?
If you opted to go with a 3 or 4 in mattress topper on the original mattress instead of replacing it, how do you like it or did you regret not replacing it?

Our 5er came with a 70x80 king that was about 5" thick it wasn't very comfortable so we put 4" topper on it. It was great for a while but, the original bed even with the topper started sagging. We have room for a 72"x 80" So we bought a 10" California King Memory Foam mattress and cut 4" off the end with a electric carving knife and used giant 4" safety pins to take the slack out of the cover. We saved about $150 over buying the "RV" mattress.

To me a mattress topper on a POS bed is like putting custom wheels on a garbage truck, it's still a garbage truck. I was tought to not neglect 2 things in my life, my bed and my shoes. You spend roughly 1/3 of your life in bed and the majority of the other2/3 wearing shoes. In my thinking a mattress topper is just trying to compensate for a bad mattress. IMO spend the extra money once, replace the culprit of the problem and be done with it.

Go mattress shopping and find the one you want and replace the whole thing. a mattress topper will not fix the issues of the lower mattress.

We added one once, and it was horrible. Frist, the size was not exact as the original mattress. Second, the topper slid around so bad it was such a pain in the neck. Third, the original mattress under it made a horrible, lousy, completely miserable foundation, which only make the topper more problematic.
Do the best thing. Save your money on toppers (or "sloppers") and apply that money to a new mattress that works for you.

Maybe the appropriate phrase is "Putting lipstick on a pig." I also believe money better spent is on a new mattress.

We bought a 3" Topper and put it under the mattress so I guess a bottomer?
I don't like foam against me.
To us foam is sweaty. Something to think about.

I took my king mattress out and installed residential queen…we love the extra space around the bed and we sleep close to each other anyway..have a queen mattress for the home also…we couldn’t even walk around the bed hardly before..just cut a little off of the plywood base and rounded the corners…much cheaper then buying a rv specific mattress also.
I’ve seen dog beds that were better quality then the mattress that comes with the rv’s (most rv’s)

We have a full size mattress at home, we sleep like spoons.
Now I'm thiking I should cut down the queen size mattress in our TT and put in a smaller size. The extra room would be good.
Thanks for the idea.

That is an excellent idea !! Never thought about putting a "topper" on the bottom. I'm gonna swap my topper to the bottom of the mattress and try it.

Mattress Topper
We bought a 3" regular queen memory foam topper. We just used an electric knife and cut it to length. We have used it for two season and have now decided to gid rid of it and the original mattress and get ourselves and decent foam mattress. We will just purchase a residential queen foam mattress and cut it to length rather than look for an RV Queen. Like flybouy said above, a topper on a crappy mattress is still a crappy setup.

We have a residential queen 60x80 original mattress in our Cougar topped with a 4” memory foam topper, works great, very comfortable! Did the same in previous campers. Happy travels!

Had similar issues with our cougar 26rbswe trailer king mattress.
We Fulltime it & the original mattress "died" in less than a year.
Tried a 4" topper (trimmed w/electric carving knife) on top of oem but no good.
Finally threw out original mattress, added a 2nd 4" topper to the 1st.
To get the firmer support I need we inserted a 1" backpackers roll up mattress where I need the xtra back support between the 2 toppers
After a year that has proven great.
We've even added 2 more backpackers mattresss on the plywood base to soften DW's side.

Over the years we've always used toppers to fix our rock hard camper mattresses. Keep in mind though, that like mattresses, there are quality toppers and there is some useless junk. Buy a good quality memory foam topper and you can't go wrong. Remember too that you may go out and find a new mattress for your camper, only to find that after a number of times sleeping on it, that it is little improvement over what you had in the first place. I've found that to be the case even in buying a mattress for the house. There is usually no need to scrap the mattress that you already have.

The OEM mattress in most units is garbage at best.. WE have nursed our OEM mattress for quite some time and are replacing the entire thing since it sages with a 14 inch foam mattress... It is also the foundation so we are correcting the sag issue we currently have plug getting a much thicker mattress...
Cutting down the board since we are downsizing from the 70 x 80 King thats in there now to the 60 x 80 Queen... It will be 500% better for our first trip of the year
