Sault Ste. Marie, Canada
It looks like we'll be headed to the "da UP" this July, to Hancock, MI, followed by a trip to Canada to Sault Ste Marie. I know not to take my weapons into Canada and to get insurance rider for vehicles, anything else to be aware of? Any recommendations on where to stay in that area?
Thanks.

McLain State Park just outside Hancock is nice. There is also a city Campground along the Portage Lake canal in Houghton, Mi just across from Hancock. In Sault St. Marie, Mi. Aune Osborn Campground is located on the St.Marys River down stream from the locks you can watch the large freighters pass by from the Campground. Aune Osborn is a city Campground. You can cross the bridge into Sault St. Marie Canada ,sorry we are unfamiliar with any in Canada. Hope this helps.

KOA in the SOO Ontario is nice. They won an award for best KOA not long ago. I stayed there in the early 70s when in trade school. Was nice then.

Yes, we have stayed at both McLain State Park and the city of Houghton’s RV park before. We have reservations back at McLain for this trip but we can’t call to reserve at Houghton park til the end of May. I looked on Google earth and the spot we stayed at the last time we were at McLain isn’t there anymore. It looks like that storm took out a lot of the road and campsites on the lake side. We’ll check into Aune Osborn. Thanks.

Well all I can say is that when we crossed the border from Alaska they made us dump out firewood we had in the back of the truck. If you have pets get paper work for them too (transport certificate from Vet) According to my cousin, she could not carry mace in her purse when she went to Victoria BC Sounds like a fun trip.

Mike, you will also be required to leave your firewood behind 'entering Alaska from Yukon Territories.' I believe in buying your firewood where you camp. Actually it is a requirement most everywhere you go. I also like to buy local where it comes to my brewery selection...

Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste Marie has a "hilltop campground" in the casino parking lot. It's not "on the waterway" and it is water/electric with onsite dump station, not full hookups, but if that works for you, it's $15 a night vs $55 three blocks closer to the water.
As for firewood, it's illegal to bring firewood across the border, across the bridge or across state lines (into the UP)...

I think we just avoid Canada for now. We will just stay on the US side of the Soo and then drive the TV over.

When we went a couple of years ago our cell phones quit literally right at the border. So you need a Canadian sim card if you want your communications device to function up there. Maybe it is different now?

Unless you have some obscure phone plan we have 5G phone systems in Canada although I'm sure like our roaming charges when we go to the USA the price of roaming will shock you. LOL Although if you pre arrange it some plans are pretty reasonable.

Make sure you have your snow tires on all four corner's. You will probably be ok without chains by the middle of July. Bring a toque as well.
Have a great adventure eh!

We were all across Canada 18 months ago with out AT&T plan. We never missed a lick. It worked great from Newfoundland and Labrador all the way to Regina, Saskatchewan. Yep, a few dead spots here and there.
