What RV Portable Generator for Bullet 269RLS

Hi,

We just purchased a Keystone Bullet269RLSWE, with the 15BTU double air. Weight is an issue, as we have a Chevy Avalanche, with 7300lb towing capacity.

What is the best selection for a portable generator for this setup? How is this determined? Thanks so much for your help, Jim

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're looking for a way to recharge batteries and watch TV a couple hours a day, then any of the 2000 watt generators would be sufficient. If you're looking to run one A/C then you'll either need a "double 2000 watt system" (2 generators hooked together with a parallel cable) or a 3100-3400 watt generator. If you're looking to run both A/C's, then you'll need roughly a 5000 watt generator. Trying to "muscle" something that big in and out of the tow vehicle will be difficult and, with an Avalanche, you'll probably "bust your payload" unless you leave everyone at home or they follow you in another vehicle.

As for brands, if price is no concern, then Honda/Yamaha are the two most expensive and some even say they are the most reliable. Champion has a 3 year warranty (just like Honda) and is about 50% of the cost, often even less when found on sale. Harbor Freight's Predator series is roughly equivalent in generator output, costs around the same as Champion, but has a 90 day warranty, after which you're on your own. HF does have a 1 year optional warranty for purchase. If you get a good one, no problem, but as with most Chinese products, not all of them are "good ones"....

So, with this info, just what are you wanting to do with your generator?

I have been using the Honda 2000 watt for several years. It powers everything except the air conditioner. I have had no trouble with it and I am very happy with its performance.

I bought a Honda because I wanted the reliability. For me, when I need a generator, I need it to work. Also, the 2000 watt is pretty light, maybe about 50 pounds.

Also, make sure you get an inverter style generator made for RVing, they are quiet. Don’t get an open frame construction style generator, they are loud.

Congratulations on your new trailer!

Jim; As a note; you state that "weight is an issue" as you have an Avalanche....and it will be. If weight is already an issue, how/what do you propose to do with the generator? It only adds more weight.

Your Avalanche is rated to tow 7300 lbs. max; the trailer is 7600 lbs. You NEED to look at the specs inside your driver door for payload, gvw and gawrs. To stay within legal specs with that truck I don't see how you can buy the generator....I suspect you don't have enough payload for the family and gear. You need to check that out....asap.
