OH NO..TT hit by tree truck in driveway!

ok, tight fit and the truck banged up against TT (2014 Cougar 21RBS), ripped cover, chipped coating off front cap and broke light lens. See pics...

So I won't be able to get it repaired until Spring unless dealer wants to store it when snow flies.

Since the coating is chipped away exposing the fiberglass underneath, should I be concerned about moisture getting absorbed into it? If so, suggestions? I will pose the question to the dealer also.

Thanks in advance for replies.

Barry, I am sorry for mainly the driver of the truck AND you, the owner. But remember the long-time first rule of adult toys.....duct tape is your friend!

So I'm still wondering what the tree had to do with this
Btw apply some silicon over the bruise and it'll keep what little moisture that could get in there out

The "Duck Tape" or "cloth duct tape" may not be waterproof. There is a "peel and stick" aluminum duct tape available at all the home improvement stores, about $6 a roll and that stuff is waterproof. I use it on my furnace vents and the water heater vents to seal them for the winter. It's easy to peel off in the spring and won't deteriorate like the cloth stuff will.

You might want to at least look at it when you're in Lowes or HD next trip.

Otherwise, since it's an insurance paid job not a warranty issue, you're not stuck with the dealer. Most boat dealers have a good relationship with fiberglass repair shops and the parts you'll need to replace are a "common stock" item at any RV shop. You might want to look around and see if there's a "better option" for repair outside the dealer network.

Good Luck !!!

I agree with JRTJH - seek out a legit gelcoat shop - probably someone who does marine repair. That's your best bet. Repairing that is not a big deal... Likely your dealer - if they do it right - outsources it.

WBDVT ours was hit by a car on Halloween. We just spoke to the dealer and he said now is the best time to take it in. In the spring a lot of new trailers need to be prepped and the mfg is busy so parts take a long time so we may not have it for our annual trip to Indy. So ours is going in on Saturday - he will do the estimate and order the parts. Ours is covered by insurance so we should be good to go. We have never towed ours in the snow and hopefully Michigan weather will be nice to us we don't have to tow it home in the snow. Good luck on your repairs - let me know how it goes.

If you do need to tow it home in the snow, be sure that on the first "nice, dry" day, you take it some place where you can rinse all the salt off the chassis. If you "put it up with salty slush on the frame, you'll probably kick yourself in the spring

It's gel coat, very easy to repair and you can get it from any auto parts store. If you want to take it to a shop, ask your insurance where they recommend. To be honest, a repair that small will probably not have much left for your insurance after the deductible, but they will have a list of authorized repair facilities. You may be surprised at how many non dealerships are RV repair shops.

Thanks for the replies. I am working with the dealer but I will try to ask the insurance company also. It is the Tree companys insurance so I am not concerned on their deductible.

Good point on not waiting for spring but I am concerned on towing in winter conditions. I may see if the dealer will store it for a fee and see if that can be covered by the insurance company.

Dont use anything on it. Any body shop can fix this. Its fiberglass. Duct tape isnt waterproof and will leave a mess on the side of your TT. Silicone would not work because it would be difficult to remove completely. The silver tape mentioned above is some good tape but once its applied its almost permanent.
Water will get behind the fiberglass if you don't keep water out.
Idea: use a piece of plastic bigger than the hole. Run a bead of silicone around the edges of the plastic and stick it over the area. The silicone will come off the side of the TT and will keep the water out. It will be easy to remove from the smooth sides.

JRTJH That is what my husband was worried about. He said he does not want to have all the salt on it. Hopefully we will have a nice mild winter (ha ha) and our tow home will be dry. We can store in our backyard so being able to rinse it won't be hard. Just like you said need a decent day to do it.

Update

Took the TT to Pete's RV here in VT on April 29 for repair. Picked it up on May 24. Excellent job, it looks like it did day of purchase. Cannot tell there was any damage and final bill came in below the amount the insurance company sent me.
