Yes and no

On a small scale yes on large scale no. I know several farmers that use soybean based bio. They are already growing the soybeans and have the conversion process equipment available on their property. One guy I talked to uses ~6 acres of soybeans to produce a years worth of bio-diesel for his tractors and trucks. He typically plants over 400 acres of soybeans every year.

I participated in a synthetic jet fuel research project. Initially, a few years ago, the cost per gallon was $135. Last year, it was down to $35/gal. It has to get below $3-$5/gal to be economically viable, then what happens to the food prices, like the corn/ethanol relationship created?

Probably where we are headed, or should be, is using natural gas for a feedstock to a GTL (gas to liquids) process. Shell has a huge GTL plant in Qatar, called Pearl GTL. They were talking about building another one in Texas or Louisiana. The investment was to be huge...estimated at $25billion. They decided not to. The spread between the nat gas feedstock and the finished product just wasn't there.
However someone announced a smaller GTL plant to be built near Lake Charles LA.
Using nat gas to create a distillate could take pressure off crude demand, particularly imports. Shell is using the Pearl product to create their Pennzoil high-end synthetic motor oil. Supposedly good stuff.
I guess I just revealed my employer.
