how things can change

Things have changed here for hubby and I in a blink of an eye. He cut two fingers off with a table saw 3 weeks ago. I had surgery on my foot the day after and he still was in the hospital. Hubby feels he really can't do the 5th wheel anymore and is looking at motorhomes.

We don't know the final verdict of his fingers. The right index finger is gone, but they reattached the middle finger at the middle knuckle, Dr. couldn't get the joint to fuse (the saw jingered to badly) so they are going to try to take bone from his wrist and put it in that knuckle so it will fuse. It will always be bent, but maybe some what usable. If that doesn't work they will amputate that finger.

I know nothing at all about motorhomes and the expense. For camping short distances, are they really that more expensive then a 5th wheel.

If anyone reading can give me pointers on this looking around for MH's I'd appreciate it.

BTW, I wish hubby would get back to work, he is driving nuts being bored!!!! (at least this is workmans comp).

Wow, good luck to the both of you. I hope everything is ok in the end, change is hard. We have been through a few things and we look at campgrounds as future seasonal sites if we get to a point that I can't do it anymore.

As for price, price for travel trailers, fifth wheels, class C and class A units are all over the place depending on new or used, size, features etc. not sure what you paid but class C's can be $50k to $125k, class A's can be $80k to $160k to 1 million depending on your budget and what you want.

I have a $30k or so trailer and would stay in the same ballpark up to $40k if I replaced it so that is another travel trailer or base fifth wheel.

You will have to look around online, at dealers or where ever to see what is in you area.

Good luck.

My travel buddy for the last 30 years has done both.

He started out in a Winnebego and moved to a travel trailer, to a 5th wheel, and last month moved back to a motorhome.

His last 5th wheel was 3 years old and he traded it and his truck he pulled it with for a 37' motorhome and says he turned up about even. He pays cash for a lot of his stuff.

As far as cost he said gas wise it is almost break even with filling the truck vs filling the motorhome with mileage, ect.

Shop around and see who will give you the best deal, ect on trade and what not.

CarMax is one of the better places to get rid of a used truck if you are looking at that.

We have some friends that we've known for almost 50 years who just recently retired and decided to "give up the little trailer" and full time for a while in a diesel pusher. After looking at new ones and realizing they'd never be able to justify the price of a new one, they found a 2004 model 37' triple slide cummins diesel pusher with just over 50K miles on it for just under $70K. It's got the floorplan, the features and the "remaining lifetime" that, for them, seemed to be the right choice. They left last week, headed for Arizona, then southern California and possibly down into Baja for the winter.

Excited? That doesn't begin to describe their enthusiasm for the new lifestyle.

So, whether it's in the Montana, towing with your truck or a "change of plans" and a new chapter with another type RV, the main thing to remember is that as long as you have that "lust for camping" some kind of RV is destined to be in your future.

Good luck with the "recent setbacks". Who knows, in a year or two, you may well look on them as a "blessing in disguise" that moved you off "home plate" and into a new part of your life that you so thoroughly enjoy, you couldn't imagine anything else.

Stay positive, make lemonade from those lemons.....

Thanks for the feed back so far. I'll tell you what he has had the best attitude and is making lemonade. I keep waiting for the whole thing to crash on him. ANDDDD stupid me for a couple of things like, when he said "I'm thinking of a motor home" and I said, "I kind of thought of that" and THEN said why don't you go to the one RV place. Well we might buy that one, but he really wants a diesel (and I am not thrilled with 8 mpg on some) and I said "why don't you go to Freedom" ugggg.

I just wanted him to have something to do and not sit at the lodge all day! (banging my head on the wall)

LOL

If you're looking for input on motorhomes you can certainly ask here. I imagine that quite a few of our members have owned motorhomes of some sort at one time or another. They do come in a variety of sizes, models -- some of which are pretty costly but I am sure you can find something that will suit your pocketbook.

Sorry to hear about you and your husband's "mishap". No gory details needed - thank you very much.

Thanks Fetus, I mean there is a lot to learn on Class A's, which is what we decided to look at. Then I have to figure out if that raises the insurance. How the heck do you know you are getting a good engine? all that kind of stuff.

Hope all heals well for both of you and are back to camping soon no matter the RV of choice! Injuries happen so fast and no do overs. I know this because I was at the ER for a hand injury today.

I'v gone from motorhome to fith wheel back to motorhome and now with a 5'ver again. The wife and I really like the 5'er so we can have the TV to get around town. With the motorhome it was either pull a vehicle or rent one when we arrived. (We typically had one rented prior to arriving for the assurance a car would be available). We actually enjoyed both.
The difference I found was this. For, lets say, $30,000 you could get a great fith wheel, for the same $30,000 you were now buying an enging and transmission so not as much floor plan as the 5'ver for same year and size. However, there are several older modle motorhomes with LOT's of living left in them for great prices. Good Luck in your choice's...and as a nurse of 35yrs, OUCH to both of you. Best of luck.

I too hope for a positive outcome for the both of you.

How the heck do you know if your getting a good motor home?

Visit forums of the brands, look at what's being said, good and bad. I work on them and have seen some cheap class A and class C units that are built like....

Only my opinion, but when you start talking about Class A motorhomes, diesel pushers are the way to go, but be prepared to spend some $$ to get a unit that wont be back in the dealership for warranty issues more than it's at the campground.

HI AZLEE SO SORRY TO HERE ABOUT your foot and your hubby. pryers for you both for quick recovery.Class A wow. they are so nice. As far as which one well floor plan is very important as in the 5er. do you know a good heavy duty truck mechanic? time to buy him dinner and take him with you to check the drive train. my personal opinion is go diesel an Cummins engine! and that is only my 2 cents. the people that i have talked with seem to have fewer problems with the Cummins engine. As to which brand of coach well i am at a loss there! they all look nice. I guess I would just start talking to people at the campground and ask for opinions. Good luck on that serch. Keep up theat lemonaide attitude you two! lets us know how the search goes and how you are doing! Wishing you both all the best from the east coast.

Wishing both you and your husband a speedy recovery!

We have some friends who bought a small, no-slide Class A for right around $30K. It was 8 years old, but only had 5000 miles! Seems as though the previous owner bought it new in North Carolina, drove down to FL, the roamed back to south of Dallas. His wife didn't like it, so they bought a S&B in Mansfield near their kids and grandkids. It was stored, and once a month, pulled out of storage for a short drive. Finally, the ol ' guy decided to sell it. Our friends got a great deal! Took it to a mechanic who thoroughly checked the engine and power train and declared it amazingly in great shape. With no slides, it fits their need for short travels just fine.

Here's hoping you can find a deal like that! Keep your eyes out, they found theirs in RV Trader.

Ron

cabinfever, I sure hope it wasn't quite like the husbands! He stayed so calm during it, but don't say he was in shock, he will glare at you. LOL

He was in a rush to find a motorhome, but I sighed in relief when he told me last night we don't have to do it right now and we should look around. The one we thought we might get (gas MH) put in for financing and the bank called me, what a screwed up mess!! Carl thought the price was 39,000 and the bank was telling me they were saying it was 79,000. I was totally confused and now is the husband.

I thought it was interesting the bank told me the value of our Montana 08 fifth wheel was 69,000. I have no idea how they came up with that worth either, I had 45,000.00 at one time. I guess I didn't check some things we have.

This the gas one we were close to buying though. http://www.frostrv.com/vehicle-detai...e9681524b409c/

I can just picture you and your DH "riding away into the white sunset" in your almost all-white Airbus and with white leather upholstery. Heck, no one will be able to see you!

Now, if you rode off into just the black sunset ..........

azlee56, Howdy;

Funny the advert. shows "Internet Price: $54,998".
Bank must be charging an enormous amount of intrest...

Looks like a fancy-schmancy MH to me ...

Best of luck with your hunt for the Perfect MH.

I think their numbers were off, the interest rate from them was 6.75, but I can get 4.65 from another that supports costco.
