I agree that the torque converter creates all the heat, but it can't create heat once it's locked. Maybe cooler & lube flow is orificed while the tcc is locked. Or the valve body is modified to crank up the pressure, which also creates heat. Trying to make sense of your statement. Ford & GM strategies have always been to engage the tcc as soon as temps get up.

Yes and no, a torque converter can not achieve 100% coupling, thus there is some slippage and the fluids Kinetic energy is lost due to friction and turbulence causing the TQ to generate heat. Basically there are three parts to a TQ the impeller (driven by the engine crank) the turbine which drives the tranny and the stator which between the turbine and impeller. The ATF is squeezed through these elements just as in fluid dynamics adding pressure to a liquid produces heat. As the parts rotate they are continuously pulling in "squeezing" (TQ locks) and releasing the fluid producing the heat.
So, as you stated pressure from the valve body creates heat, so does the TQ in its locked position, as stated, you can not achieve 100% lock up. TQ lock is basically achieved once the turbine (tranny driver) reaches 90% of the impeller speed.

Any newer trannies with Lock-up torque convertors are 100% locked with NO slippage (just like a manual transmission) when in lockup.
Auto trans will run much cooler in lockup.

Some trans will heat if for example you are pulling hard in a hill and the transmission has down shifted to 2nd gear (and TC is unlocked). In this scenario if you manually shift to 2nd gear the TC will then lock and stay locked as long as you have manual second engaged .

Driving slowly in lower gears (ie construction on long hills) will quickly heat up trans to high temp if TC unable to lockup.

exactly what I was trying to explain, how and where the heat is generated, big difference in fluid vs mechanical lock-up. Heat is generated from the TC trying to lock up which it can not do alone to 100% lock-up, as you explained the tranny/TC requires the "mechanical clutch" to engage for 100% lock-up. Still a good discussion and education on "How It Works".

That good; but some of us do not want our left leg larger than our right leg and do not want to hold a hand-shaker all day long. We need to drink our coffee.

I love to multi-task and drive. That's what cup holders are for.

I really do bit look forward to the day I purchase my next truck and the manual is no longer available. It's the trend.
