Camp Robber

We're new to tt camping, live in CO. Had a funny event this weekend. I was cooking breakfast outside, stepped away from the stove for a minute and a grey bird swooped in and grabbed a large piece of sizzling bacon right out of the frying pan and flew off! I'm pretty sure it was a Clarks Nutcracker. Ballsy little bastard, lol. I couldn't believe he'd grab something that hot. Hats off to you buddy, 2 for me, 1 for you. Every trip has a new surprise of some sort. I feel blessed to live here and experience the wonders of nature. So much more profound than the stupid crap the happens in Washington.

Oh that's funny! We have a bird story we like to reminisce about - not a thief though. While camping in Hoyt Lakes many years ago, there must have been a nesting yellow finch family in our site. This finch would perch on the driver's side mirror and leave nice droppings all over the front and back, then would perch on the truck door by the window and leave more droppings down the door, all the while he was scolding us. We knew to keep our windows closed while in that site, only because a couple weekends before that, friends of ours were in that site and the same yellow finch (we can only assume) kept flying into the cab of his truck and leaving his mark there. HA HA

We had a "pet" Jay in AK that would come by every morning tapping on the kitchen window for peanuts. He looked pretty haggard with one eye and a gimpy leg, especially when it was raining. Felt sorry for the little guy. Got to the point that he would eat out of my hand. My wife would jokingly say, "Your little democrat buddy is back." I admired his persistent struggle for survival. The nature interface can be a cool experience.

Years ago we were at Noble's campground in Ellsberg PA (fantastic amusement park that runs into the campground) in a Keystone Cabaña hybrid trailer. An unknown bird that was whistling incredible loudly awoke us at daybreak and did not take a break for a solid 1/2 hr. My wife asked "what species is that bird?" to which I immediately replied " endangered if it doesn't shut up!". On cue as if it heard me it fell silent. One of our fun memories of that cg.

In the south end of Chetek, a Wisconsin we witnessed a doe hit by a car. Continued over a few weeks and we spotted her often with the gimpy leg. Last we saw her by the liquor store she had her two fawns with her. Yep, still only three good legs.

Years ago, long before I had a driver's license and before A/C and even window screens, my grandmother made a batch of lemon meringue pies and set them on the window sill to cool. A jay apparently decided that one of them was a bird bath and proceeded to "splash all the water" off the top of a pie, before Grandma could chase him away, he'd managed to get all 4 of her pies. Needless to say, she was not a happy camper that Saturday.... If Grandpa had been home I'm sure we'd have had "sweet bird" for supper LOL

In AK we never leave any food items outside. Eagles, crows, squirrels, jays, bears and the neighborhood dogs.

I haven't had a GOOD lemon meringue pie in decades. I've almost given up trying, buying and asking.

About 45 years ago we took my sister and her husband to a place we really liked; Apishapa Pass in CO for their first anniversary; my parents tagged along. Elevation was about 11, 250 if I recall. We spent a few days there.

Back in those days it was remote and virtually no one came there. After setting up camp we noticed a large crow that seemed very taken by us being there. It wasn't afraid of us....just curious. It also liked "stuff". It would come down and take a plastic fork, spoon or whatever it could find; I guess because it was a hoarder It was actually pretty cute.

One day my mom was wandering around and the crow came down to grab something else. It took the item and my mom went toward it waving her arms and telling it to get out. Now, picture my mom. About 45-50 and one that had teased her hair into a tall pile for decades. To top it off every morning she sprayed what must have been a 1/2 can of Aqua Net hairspray into the "mass". She had a virtually impenetrable helmet on her head. Now, she's hollering at the crow, it takes off with whatever it had looking back at her. It drops its prize, wings a big U turn and flies right over her while she's looking up........then when right over her it poops! It lands right square in the middle of the front of her "hair helmet", sort of sticks there and splatters across the front of her face. She starts screaming and yelling; at us, the crow and the world in general. My wife and my sister had to help her because I was laughing so hard I was crying. I thought it was a cute, intelligent and neat crow; my mom had other thoughts about it. She and dad are gone but we kids still laugh our tails off when we talk about it.

All that to say that I agree; nature is profound and has so many things in it to enjoy if folks would get out and do it. Heck, yesterday afternoon we had a brown bear, looked about 600 lbs., climb into a tree right in front of our place and go to sleep....right in front of us. Don't know how he could sleep all tangled up in the branches but he was out. Last night I went out to check on him and he was wide awake....up there. He actually tried talking to me; not roars but chucking and little growl/snorts while I was looking at him; pretty awesome.

Not necessarily robbers, but a few neighbor folks kinda got my son scared. This was just a couple months back, in MS. It sure was funny, he didn't think so.

I once had a raccoon sneak up and grab a bag of chips on the ground next to my chair and try to run off with it. Heard a noise and looked down, and there a was the bandit staring right up at me. I gave chase and he dropped them about 20 feet away.
