12 volt tv?

i have what looks like a 12 volt tv, my trailer repair guy said it was

but no power/red light on the front except for the few min i had the genny running earlier

genny issues so cannot test more that way

fuse is fine, i am not sure what else to check

it is an insignia and i think it was the one that came with the camper

am i wrong in thinking this is supposed to run off my batteries? would there be a switch on the back to turn it to 12 volt or something

Does the TV have a normal 115v cord and plug or is it plugged into a 12v socket? 12v socket will look just like the one in your car. That will be the easiest way to tell.

Just look at the cord. If it goes straight from the tv to an outlet, it is 110AC. If the cord plugs into an adaptor that plugs into an outlet, then it is most likely 12V but needs 110AC to power the adapter. If the tv plugs into a "cigarette lighter" style plug, then it is 12V and should operate on battery power.

Will be back at the camper and 30 or 40 minutes and will try to trace the wire, it goes into a cabinet but maybe I can look above and below the sink and try to trace it

I don't know why my trailer guy thought it was 12 volt but he said that as soon as he saw it...

traced the wires and it has a big "power brick " looking thing plugged into a kind of weird looking 110 socket

the power brick says it is a switchover

so does this mean the tv needs 12 volt but keystone was cheap and did not wire any 12 volt sockets and so the tv is switched over to 110??

guessing i need to find a regular 12 volt cord for it and have a 12 volt plug put back there?

let me know if this is off base

That sounds more like an adapter that plugs into 110v and converts to 12vdc. Like a computer.

If you can pull the tv side cord out of the brick then you can buy an adaptor same as if you can pull the cable out of the TV. On one of mine I just cut the cable, added a smoke lighter and plugged it into the lighter on the wall.

I have had insignia TV's in the past and they have never operated on 12 Volts DC. You don't mention the size of the TV but what you describe sounds like a flat panel which is small enough that to conserve space, they moved the internal 110 volt voltage converter which you never see on most TV's to the outside in order to save weight and space in the panel itself. You likely need the RV on shore power or a generator for this TV to work. The brick may convert the voltage to DC but most TV's and computers for that matter use multiple DC voltages some of which are higher than 12 volts which is why they can't just be wired into the RV's 12 volt system directly.

Look at the power brick, there should be a label on it that states input/output voltages and input/output current.

If the output voltage is 12V - make or buy a cable, with the correct plug, to connect to the TV and a cigarette outlet and make sure the polarity is correct, you should be good to go.

looks like one of my stereo/car alarm guys is going to make some money off me adding 12 volt/usb plugs around this camper

really need this as much boondocking as i will be doing

Your picture posted just fine. Clearly printed on the brick is output of 12VDC. Your going to be able to watch TV while boondocking.

awesome, so i just need to find this same brick with a 12 volt cig plug on the end

and pay someone to add that plug to the camper!

will go through all the drawers etc but pretty sure i did not see a plug like that anywhere

+1 with Chuckster57, but be careful with should.

Make sure the barrel size is the same, and more importantly, the polarity. If it's backwards, you'll insert a hot power cord into the TV and absolutely nothing will happen. No spark, puff of smoke, noise, nothing. The TV just won't work and you'll think the cord's bad. Then you'll check it with the original 110v power cord and still nothing. After checking the 12v cord with a multimeter, you'll find the polarity is backwards. Then you'll be searching ebay for a replacement tv power board that runs about $25. Don't ask me how I know.

Bottom line....Check the polarity of both the trailer socket AND cord before hooking to your television. Only takes a minute, but will save you lots of
