Hot Water Tank

Good morning all!

Quick question, with a dual electric/propane hot water tank - is it strictly an either/or thing? I would think that I could maintain hot water using CG electricity...but I'm guessing that propane offers quicker recovery time for 4 showers out of a 6 gallon tank - so, just leaving both switches on in that case.

Would appreciate any input or feedback on this.

Thanks,
Eric

Good morning Eric, I leave the electric on only when plugged in at the CG. It recovers pretty quick on electric, at least in ours it does. I was surprised at how quickly it recovered after showers on Electric. I would rather save my propane. Happy Camping, Sam

I turn on propane when showering for a long shower and fast recovery. I'm not going to fool with turning water on and off while showering. If the cost of that amount of propane was an issue, I think I would opt for a less expensive pastime.

Dual HW heating

Eric -

Yes, you can heat with both electricity and propane at the same time. I would recommend this only when a lot of hot water will be needed.

We use electric to maintain hot water and turn on gas for showers. It is amazing how well the water heater recovers with both on. When using A/C we turn off the circuit breaker for hot water. Hot water and A/C together will come very close to overloading 30amp service, add the draw of your converter or anything else and you may trip breakers. JM2¢, Hank

Talking Electric

We usally just use the electric when plugged in. Showers have never been an issue because I'm ex-Navy and got use to getting clean with a three minute shower while underway on the deep blue sea. I even taught the DW but when we are at a location that offers showers with our camping fee we do cheat and take longer showers but only then.

Navy Way: Get wet and rinse. Shut water off while you soap up, then scrub and rinse.
Have never had any mold grow or dirt left. Squeeky Clean

Thanks for the input everyone! You've answered the main question which was can they both be on at once...I suspect that I'll be switching the gas on if I can't convince my teens of the Navy way!

You probably won't convince teens of much..... Once the bathroom door is closed, it's "every man (woman or child) for himself" and hot water useage will go up without a doubt. Use both propane and electric, it'll be much easier than trying to talk a teen out of the shower!!!!! LOL
