I brought my own ball to the tow party for our new RV.

Talking Torquing your Balls

I had a friend who was a heavy equipment mechanic. He had a torque wrench that went to 750 ft lbs (with a cheater bar). I would suggest that you call a local shop that repairs large 18 wheelers or Construction equipment. I turned my new unit upside down in my receiver which gave him the needed anchor so that he could go to 450 ft lbs. He also had a wrench large enough to hold the ball while torquing the unit.

I showed up with the WDH when we picked up this last trailer two years ago. When backing up to the camper after PDI the shop manager says to me, “Normally people show up without anything! You’re ready I see.”

Not to railroad this thread but I’m wondering what batteries have to do with residential fridges? aren’t those 110v ? Or are you saying they run on an inverter?

Batteries have everything to do with using a res fridge in an RV. Without them you can't run the fridge when traveling. Yes, they go through an inverter to enable that. Without it a res fridge (which I have) would be pretty much useless.

I brought my own WDH to pick up our unit. The ball was pre-installed and tightened to spec. Rated at 14,000 lbs. and remains tight (I check every spring).

My brother on the other hand, almost dropped his toyhauler because he never bothered to check the rating or tightness of the ball on his used WDH towing his brand new unit with two Harleys in the garage. Luckily I saw the ball move when I was helping to get him connected to leave our first campsite.

I own a 600 ft/lb torque wrench. That said, I blast the hell out of the nut with a 450 ft/lb rated 1/2 air wrench (windy gun to our British friends)
