Westbound for the summer

Planning to leave Kentucky in early May and head through Waco, Tx and out west through Grand Canyon and on to Yellowstone and Glacier before heading back home through the northern states. Any advice/experience about places to avoid, weather in May in Yellowstone/Utah, or Glacier would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Early spring weather in Montana is sometimes colder than you might be used to and during storms, high mountain passes can be tricky. You should be OK but you'll want to check highway conditions if the weather turns bad. The three Parks you mention are busy so expect crowds. I'd recommend visiting Grand Teton NP on the way to Yellowstone. I think it's just as scenic and I've seen more wildlife there than in Yellowstone. Stay at the Gros Venture campground near moose junction.

We have visited Yellowstone a few times in the middle of May and find it the best time for wildlife, but you won't find the entire park open (snow). And as was suggested, be SURE to spend a day or two in the Grand Teton Park. We have seen more moose in that park than anywhere.

I will have to echo Jim; snow in May will more than likely be a consideration and Grand Teton is not to be missed in the rush to Yellowstone.

We did a southwest camping trip the last of May, on our way the BIL wedding in CA - 20 + years ago.

Camped the north rim of the grand canyon, there was still snow on the ground, camped in Zion it was amazing, tent camping right on the river with day trips to Bryce Canyon, camped in Sequoia, also amazing and 1/2 of the camp ground was closed due to snow - they have trees that are bigger around than our trees are tall.

The wedding was June 5th and then we went to Tiburon, Big Sur, Long Beach and then drove straight home; Long Beach to Dallas, in 26 hours.

We tried to spend 3 or 4 nights at each place, the kids were little then and they still talk about the trip today... 3+ weeks, 5200 miles.

Fun times.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips. I plan to keep the rig out of the parks and find campgrounds located between 2-3 parks to explore the parks from the same place.

I used to live in Browning Montana, right on the east side of Glacier National Park. I know there are length limits for some of the roads there and one important thing; we did not say it was spring until AFTER the May blizzard. Going to the Sun Road seldom opens before the end of May, sometimes as late as July.

What Bob said "Going to the Sun Road seldom opens before the end of May, sometimes as late as July."

Been there twice around the fourth of July and have yet to see the road. Closed both times for avalanche problems.

Opening of Going To The Sun certainly varies. I've crossed it two different years in June

I am at West Glacier May 10-14; what I am hearing is that is less than 50-50 chance the road is open. Are there other things that are open without the aforementioned road?
