We set out the tomato and pepper plants yesterday. All the frost was over, so we thought. Tonight's forecast, changed from Tuesday, is for 33F temps, chance of light frost over the entire region and heavy frost in low lying areas. So, out comes the milk jugs for tonight. Who knows when it'll "really warm up"... a couple years ago we lost all our tomatoes in July to a "not expected overnight frost"...

As for that "four letter S word".... keep it out west in the mountains !!!!!

Would be more than happy to send some of our 90 plus degree heat your way - but not in exchange for snow and cold.

Wow! That's beautiful! Makes you just want to get out in it and "hang out" doesn't it? On the other hand, go ahead and keep it. It's beautiful but DW and I decided many years ago, after spending many winter months at our house in the mountains, that if we wanted to see/be in snow we would drive to it, play in it then leave it. We've pretty much shoveled all the snow we want to.

John how do your peppers fair with this weather? I still won't take my peppers or tomatoes out of the greenhouse to plant as our weather is all over the place.

They do well as long as we're around to cover them on those few "cold nights"... Every time we've lost them has been with an unexpected cold snap that happened when we were out of town and not here to care for them that night. It's a challenge since we can't cover them and leave, so it's always a risk.

My two attempts at maintaining a greenhouse have failed because of roof systems not capable of supporting the snow load in this area. I just can't justify taking down a greenhouse for the winter and trying to get it up (in the ice) to be able to use it in the spring. So, for me at least, greenhouse use is not an option.

Started snowing here yesterday. Continued overnight - 6" on the ground this morning and been snowing/raining, sleeting all day and will continue through Friday. High today has been 45 and it is dropping rapidly. Got the 'ol pellet stove fired up but am just about out of pellets. Had to get the winter coats back out and put on thick socks. I'd say we should never have left El Centro, CA but it was 102 there. Still, this has left me time to research disk brake conversions and MORryde rubber pin box. Got that all set to go. We were thinking about a new 5er but will have to put that off for a while.
