Water heater plug thred type and size
Hi all!
So, like everything else I thought it was gonna be simple.
Over winter i bought a new water heater plug with anode, only to find out today it won’t screw in. The old plug was badly corroded and worn. The female threads on the water heater were cleaned as best as possible with fitting brush.
The new plug seems like it wants to start, but I don’t want to push my luck.
I would like to chase the threads with a tap that I can borrow from work.
Am not eager to bugger up the threads.
The old plug leaks even with teflon tape. Would like not to use it.
Any chance it would be a npt thread?
Of course family will be arriving tomorrow. Hot water not a deal breaker for them coming, but would be nice.

If I'm correct it isn't a straight in thread. On mine I have to tilt the anode rod up a little to start the thread. By tilt up I'm meaning the tip inside the water heater is tilted up just a little. At least that's the way mine is

Thank you both!
I’ll grab that tap and chase the threads.
I’ll harbor positive thoughts during my work a day.

I did try cutting anode down so as not to have it weigh down unit so it wouldn’t make in.
Those female threads are quite full of rust.

Chase it out with a 3/4 npt tap. If you grease the tap it will hold the metal shavings. Run it in partially, withdraw, wipe it down, recoat with grease and repeat. Then flush it out well with water before installing the anode.

Just an update.
Got threads chased enough to get plug started, but found upon a few tank drainings that because the trailer was not very well leveled water pooled up at mounting ring for the water heater and found it’s way into the trailer.
Will get more boards under low side before there are any more attempts.
The tap was having a real hard time chasing the rusty threads.
If it comes to replacing the water heater, any suggestions on where to start looking?

Follow up
So, a followup to the op.
Ended up ordering and receiving a new water heater from suggested ppl motorhomes.
It was damaged in shipping. They were fantastic to deal with, but understandably extremely busy and a bit hard to get a hold of on the phone. They sent another unit that unfortunately was also damaged. The department at suburban that designed the packaging should have another go at it.
I opted to keep the second unit with a discount not yet applied to my card as of thid writing.
It can be set straight with a bit of time and finesse.
Will get to the job soon, and let hou very helpful folks know how it goes.
