Awning fabric replacement

I am about to replace my old awning fabric and have watched many videos about it. Most require removing the tension and spring. The instructions for my new fabric says this is not required. They say to drill the end cap and cut a grove for the fabric to slide out. This does seem easier but I would like to see what y’all have to say about it.

Is your awning electric or manual? Do you have a link to this video?

I’m not sold on the idea of drilling a hole in the end cap.

It’s manual. It wasn’t a video just instruction on their website. I think I am going to do it the other way. I’m afraid of what would happen if I accidentally hit the release while trying their method. I was looking forward to your opinion. I have learned to trust your judgment on this forum.

That's exactly what I did, drill and slot the end cap. I was concerned it may weaken the plastic cap so I added additional rivets holding the cap to the roller tube.

I supported the roller on a ladder and had a couple extra sets of hands.

It is cumbersome to handle all that fabric and feed it into the awning rail and roller at the same time.

All in all it was a lot easier than I anticipated, but then I never saw a video giving instructions. Several years later everything is great.
