Brakes Upside Down?

On a recent trip, we had to have an axle changed on the side of the road. When I got home, something did not look right. I pulled a hub and found the attached photo. The brake plate appears upside down to me. I thought I could just spin the brake plate around, but it has a 5 bolt pattern that will not let me do that. The left/right markings for the plate appear to be correct. Left on divers side.

First question, the adjuster and brake magnet is currently at the top of the brake plate. Is that a problem? I am concerned that gravity will make the brake magnet drag on the hub more than normal.

Second question, I did not pull the other hub, is the brake plate bolt pattern different on the left/right side? Could the axle be installed backwards?

I think you are right Mark. Any brakes I ever worked on had the adjusters at the bottom. Would that axle be for springs mounted below the axle?

If both sides are the same I would think the axle is installed upside down.

Does your axle have a positive camber? If it has a negative camber, it is upside down.

Axle is on upside down. Adjuster and magnet should be at bottom

I think they put on a axle built in Australia that's meant to be used in the Southern hemisphere.

Your axle may be built to be installed on the other side of your spring pack. I can't tell from the photo, but if the axle is below the spring, then it was intended to be on the top of the spring, and the reverse is true if it is mounted on top of the spring. Regardless, it is the wrong axle for your rig.
