A/C question

Howdy All;

Going into the cooler temps but in Southern NM the A/C is still a requirement.
Here 's the question, my A/C is acting kinda funny this past few days. Runs
fine till the afternoons then it appears to run with a reduced output. By reduced output
I mean, it's still running at the same noise level however the cool air is
lacking from the outlets. There is only a fraction of what was coming out
most of this Summer and the past several Summers.
I have a feeling that it's about to go feet in the air ... but if it might be something
like a circuit board or other replaceable part that would be even better.

Any ideas out there???

I can't help with the AC unit, but I can say "Dog: 2006 Border Collie (Rascal) aka Maximum fur dispersal unit" now that's funny I don't care who you are. I had not noticed that in your signature line before.....

How long has it been since the evaporator and condensor have been cleaned....and the filter? Those components need to be kept pretty clean or it restricts not only the air flow, but the ability to transfer heat from the condensor and allow the evaporator to transfer, with air flow across it....the cooling air. You might want to try that as a first step, unless it has been done pretty recently.

I change and clean the filter twice a week due to the "Fur dispersal unit"
noted in the above comment, working overtime this year. At the beginning of
the season I'd gone up on the roof, pulled the casing off and brushed all
the fins then blew them out with the air compressor, the in side fins got
much the same except vacuumed instead of air compressor blow out.
I can go about the down stairs bit but less then a week after cataract
surgery I 'don't think the Doc wants me climbing, and I was told not to do
bending over . Having only 1 lens in the frames and 2 distinct focal distances
makes life challenging enough right now.

This happened in New Mexico and suddenly? Have you observed AC voltage output from your source in the morning versus the afternoon?

Hank, Since it is working fine early in the day and than poops out later on it may be icing up. This can happen in high humidity (don't think you have that in NM), running with low speed fan for long periods or restricted air flow. As mentioned low voltage can cause it also. Get someone else to look at it .... take care of your eyes ..... they are the only ones you are going to get ... Rascal needs you, The other Hank

Thanks for the thought ... Rascal can't reach the thermostat and besides,
he's got no thumbs and there isn't anyone else to change it.

That's a thought , we have been having some large quantities of rain to
finish out the Monsoon Season here and the humidity levels are far higher
then they normally are. Instead of our usual single digit to 35%
and sometimes even into the 70 or 80 % area (need to find my East
Coast gills out of storage. Had 0.25" 3 days ago and 2 days ago we had 1.25"
of rain. Generally don't see that much in 3 or 4 months.

I'll let ya know what I discover, again, thanks all for the thoughts and ideas.

A year ago, I had something similar going on. Early in the summer, when it wasn't so hot, the AC worked without issue, but in the middle of the summer, it could not keep up. We were hitting temps in the upper 90's, lower 100 and it was miserable.

After some work, and research, I figured out we were low on refrigerant. The issue; no service port to add in refrigerant and I wasn't going to spend $1000+ on a new unit because we were low on refrigerant.

Solution: I found a Bullet Piercing Valve that I was able to put on the unit and add in refrigerant. Last weekend it was in the mid 90's, and the AC unit was keeping the camper nice and cool, not that I spent much time in the camper, but it sure is nice to sleep in an cool camper than one that is sweltering hot.

Thanks for that suggestion. What I've discovered is that I had apparently
moved the Thermostat temp. selector to a lower temp. The result was that
it was working against itself (right hand not communicating with left hand
type of thing), after moving it up to a warmer selection (nearer to 80 deg. F),
What with the thermostat hving a 10 deg. above cut-in and a 10 deg. below
cut-out when it was set closer to 70 deg. F it was cycling down into the low
60's and cutting off the fan and only the compressor was working and not all
that efficiently at that.
So, with the new setting it's able to function properly and still cools well.
By the way, when we hit the 90's is generally late April and do regular
bouts of triple diget heat during June & early July and it's the dry heat.
Then the "Monsoon Season" hits and generally leaves mid Sept.'ish.

My rear window approx. 4' X 3' and rear slide window slightly larger, are
exposed to the sun (trailer oriented N/S, nose to North), and I have a
oxygen concentrator for my COPD generates heat), so without A/C my
interior temps can climb into the >120 zone quickly.

Now our night temps are getting into the mid 50's and our daytime temps are still mid to upper 80's. Just checked and righ now it's 81 with 19% humidity A/C running smooth and well.
