Toilet running
Hello everyone enjoying a nice trip in oceanview nj. Need a little advice on my toilet. It's a porcelain toilet, and it has holes all around the top for the water to come to flush. For some reason today after I used the toilet I know tmi it will not stop bringing water into the bowl. I made sure there is nothing blocking the door from closing. Any suggestions?
Thanks

There are manuals online for both Dometic and Thetford toilets, all current models of both. You might want to determine what unit you have and go get the manual, unless you already have it as part of the literature that should have come with the trailer.
In all the manuals, there is a troubleshooting section. I looked in a Dometic manual and they say that replacing the water valve is needed if the unit won't stop running.
But it's also possible that the valve is not closing all the way (which will also cause the water to run), you need to clean and lube it.

Whether your "LOO" is a foot flush, or a hand lever, if it refuses to shut off, the first thing I would try is to let it "SNAP" shut, the flush valve may be stuck. Bear in mind that the valve purposely adds 2 to 4" +/- water to the bowl to provide a positive seal against tank fumes, and to add some "skid control" to your solids. Some water is a good thing!

Ok so I replaced the valve and that did the trick. Thanks Steve for the advice I read my manual and it said in trouble shooing section if it does not stop running the valve is shot. The guy at the parts counter told me these domestic toilets are notorious for these valves failing. After he took my $50.00 that is.

I hope he at least said "Have a good day" as he took your money. I believe that part should only be around $30. US.
Have a nice day, Hank

I know how you feel. I have over paid locally several times and did not mind because of the convenience. As long as they are helpful and knowledgeable it is worth keeping them in business.
BTW, water will weep out of those holes in the rim for some time after flushing, it is normal as long as it eventually stops.

Another reason the toilet continues to run is the flapper is not sealing, letting water continue to run into the black tank. If left unattended, this will eventually fill the black tank and then your unit. I don't need to describe the problems that would create. Occasionally greasing the seal and making sure the water turns off every time it is flushed will prevent this disaster.

I think I read in the Dometic manual that if the toilet isn't winterized properly, the valve will fail, and is not warranteed for freeze damage. Is it possible that the valve experienced cold weather at some time?

This is the very reason that when we leave the fifth wheel I shut off the outside water source. I've read so many horror stories about flooded fifth wheels.. Only takes a minute. Wife always asks me when I get in the truck did you turn off the water? We use the buddy check system on everything.. As we get older we tend to forget.. Working together as a team helps

You read correctly. It's happened to me once... ONCE. Was new to camping. Didn't know a few procedures. Or knew them but overlooked them is a better statement. Very easy fix though thank goodness.
