If the toilet drains straight down into the black tank, you can always do a visual.

I've never had problems with my tank indicators but I do clean the tanks out carefully. As for filling your water tanks - put a hose in the tank filler, turn on the tap and when water starts spewing back out of the filler, it's usually an indication that the tank is full! I agree with you though, that the tank is a pain trying to fill without a hose. You have to get a funnel with a curved spout and while somebody holds the funnel, you pour the water into the filler.

Same here!
I would recommend not turning the faucet on full blast while filling so once you see it trickling out the vent, rather than squirting across the lot, shut it off so as not to over pressure the tank.
