Key TV

We just purchased a 2020 Avalanche with the Key TV system and do not have satelite. However, we are within 50 miles of major TV stations and cannot get any decent reception with the non-adjustable antenna. Is this pretty much their way of helping to sell satellite TV or is there anything we can do? Pretty awful to have three TVs and not able to watch anything. And we pretty much only watch news, etc., and spend most of our time enjoying outdoors.

I don't know anything about the new KeyTV systems, but I do know television reception is very fickle. Before ruling out the TV system, check with your neighbor campers and see what kind of television reception they are getting. If theirs is limited also, then it's not your system. You are just in a pocketed area with lousy reception. We have found, returning to the same campgrounds over the years, that reception can vary between sites within the same campground, just feet apart.

I don’t think it’s a ploy to sell sat tv. I have the Winegard Sensor Pro. It is directional and must be raised when in use and lowered when traveling. After raising it you have to rotate it to point it at the tower.

When they started installing the omnidirectional antennas I’d ask folks how many Chanel’s they were getting. I always received more, sometimes many more. Any directional antenna will out perform an Omni one.

So why did they change. I would make a SWAG that it’s for ease of installation. An Omni can be screwed down anywhere on the roof and run the cable to where needed. A directional must be mounted with space enough for the antenna to lay flat on the roof when lowered AND come thru to the interior with ample room to crank it up and rotate it.

So bottom line if you ask your neighbor and they have a crank up batwing except to get fewer Chanel’s. Depending on terrain 50 miles is probably pushing it. There are several good antenna apps that will tell you what stations are available and how far away they are.
