First keep looking for the amp. Button is located on a standard face plate some time accompanied by a coaxial male connector and/or a 12 VDC cigarette lighter plug. You will eventually find it look everywhere, have been found in cabinets, closets etc.
Sounds like you have no connection in the garage. Besides tight I would go through all connections again taking each apart and making sure that center conductor is long enough and not shorted against the outside of the actual plug (shield). While doing that I would check cotinuity of each cable and sketch up a diagram where each cable goes.
