This Might have been my brake problem...
Chasing brake issues since last season. Had a good trip last October and thought it was fixed. Not so. Finally think I ran it down.
Kept getting the GM "Check Trailer Wiring" message with the associated loss of trailer brakes. Sometimes last a couple seconds before the "Trailer Brakes Connected" message came on, sometimes minutes Might get a trip without any problems. Might happen 20 times in an hour.
Went through the truck and trailer plugs, the trailer umbilical, took all the hubs off and inspected brakes. Inspected and cleaned grounds, etc....
Intermittent problem. Never really found anything and problem never completely resolved. Today, took down the coroplast and inspected back to axles. Nothing. So then I cut the ends and pulled the lamp cord wiring that goes from driver side to passenger side out of both axles. Picture is what came out of front axle. Very close to dead center. The kink was there. Probably kinked during install which is why it rubbed through and shorted is my guess.
Ran new jacketed marine grade wire across back of axles attached with zip ties. Brakes tested good (they had before) and got no messages on the test drive (has happened before). But, at least I feel I found a problem.
One more thing. When I would get the "Check Trailer Wiring" message I would have zero trailer brakes. During troubleshooting I discovered I could run with one brake completely disconnected, have good braking on three wheels and get no messages in the truck. So, not sure what the truck computer is looking at, but is isn't everything and the lack of trouble messages in the truck doesn't mean all brakes are working. Check the temps.
Be safe everybody.
