F350 DRW Vs F450

Currently pulling a new Cougar 316RLS with the F250 in my sig. Yes, I am over GVWR I don't need to be beat up about that. Wife has given me the go ahead to get a new truck given that we have roughly $30,000 in equity in the current one. There is a ford dealership near me that has both 350 DRW and 450's in stock. Looking at 4X4 CC lariat trim levels and the 6.7- wife needs heated seats due to back issues. The diesel comes standard on the 450 and is optional on the 350 but the msrp for similar vehicles comes out within a couple thousand of each other. I just started this process and have yet to drive either of them. I plugged in a vin for comparably equipped trucks on my insurance companies website and the 450 is a whopping $13.55 more per month than the 350 DRW. I am going cross eyed looking at the super duty brochure. Can anyone tell me if there is any appreciable difference between the two trucks besides the wide track steering on the 450?

IMHO, the most "appreciable difference" between the F350 DRW and the F450 is the front axle... In years past, Ford offered the wide stance front axle as an option in the F350 DRW. They dropped that option several years ago, leaving the F350 with only the "conventional front axle". Turning radius on the F350 will be SIGNIFICANTLY greater than on a comparable F450...

I think that once you drive both, comparing "turning radius" of the two, when you consider what it takes to back a large fifth wheel into a "back in campsite", you'll appreciate the better maneuverability of the F450.....

If I had a F350 DRW that was working for my needs, I certainly would not trade it in on a F450. That said, if I were upgrading and could choose either, all other things being relatively equal on the trucks, I'd opt for the F450, just to get the wide stance front axle.

Drive them both, making a couple of "U turns" or "parking lot maneuvers" and you'll see what I mean.

Interesting your new 5er has a GVWR of 12,300#, you are not likely
Grossly over GVWR.
So now to the next TV, you will not be in a payload pinch so tough choice. The F450 comparably equipped will have less sticker payload than the same F350.
The reason both the F350 and F450 have a 14,000# GVWR, Ford does this to the F450 pickup to make insurance and registration less costly.
The F450 is a stronger and heavier truck, that is why the payload is less. If you plan on going bigger in the future get the F450.

I have a large 5th Wheel Toy Hauler (20,000 lbs GVWR) and use a F350 CrewCab, 4x4, Dually 6.7 diesel. I am certainly within all my truck and trailer ratings, but if I were to do it over again, I would choose the the F450, as long as the registration and insurance wasn't to the moon higher.

From the horses mouth: We have had the F-450 for two years exactly. I park in a hospital's small parking lot EVERY DAY and make u-turns in Okeechobee, Florida MANY times every day......DW's ongoing knee surgery problem....be sure to buy the F-450. The turning radius makes it all worthwhile. I truly am a big supporter of all three big names, but the F-450 comes to the top because of the ease of parking. PM me if you want more info.

I would jump on the f450, I tried to find one in November and December and didn’t have any luck anywhere close to me.
The 350 is also a great truck but IMO the 450 looks fantastic with the wide track front end and the extra fender flares up front. My wife’s cousin has one and loves the turning radius.
The only thing you lose on getting the 450 is no factory tpms (might have changed for 2021)
And the cost of tires will probably be quite a bit higher because they are 19.5
BUT when your buying a $80000 truck what’s a few thousand here or there.
As soon as you get the 350 you will notice more and more 450s and if your like me ...wish you made that choice
Don’t think you would ever have a problem selling it either although all diesel trucks move quick
I wouldn’t even consider the gas 350 dually but that’s just me

In your situation I’d most likely just get a SRW F350. However, if I saw a possible larger rig in the future than it would be the F450 in a heartbeat.

Bet the Lariat model, 4x4 and such means the payload of the 250 is around 2K lbs. He is over I am guessing but he didn't want to go over the 250's capabilities but is looking for a larger and more suitable camper. I have an F350 and it has the turning radius of the Queen Mary. Would love to have an F450 but they cost more than my house so will stick with my clunker. If you have the means, go big with the F450.

Why so many U-turns? Is this an age related phenomenon?

Problem with a SRW is that if you get the diesel, 4x4, short bed, crew cab and all decked out in the Lariat trim, what payload does this type truck have? If you want that stuff, the DRW anything makes sense.

I honestly can't fathom why anyone would spend good money for a 1 ton SWR... complete waste of money.

Well many look at a SRW with a 4,000# +/- payload and figure that is a lot, well we lost/used 1,400# of our payload with us, dog, hitch, and in bed tool box. That isn’t too much of and issue with our DRW and 5,411# payload, and 2,700# pin.
Had we gone to a SRW and 4,000# +/- payload 4,000 - 1,400 = 2,600# putting us over GVWR. That is based on a 2013 or newer RAM SRW long bed Diesel and 12,300# GVWR. Until 2020 the F350 SRW LB diesel only had a GVWR of 11,500#!
Sure I wish our Ram 3500 DRW had a tighter turning radius, but one learns to live with it.

I just did a search on fords website and there is not one f450 within a 100 miles in xlt, lariat or king ranch trim.
found one 2021 platinum 450 63 miles away.
That’s the problem I had when I was looking, thought it would have changed by now

I bought a USED 1 ton SRW because I am poor and it cost me $7K cash money; subsequently have put a few bucks into the truck but still only around $10K and the truck is reliable and safe. 4000 lb payload is plenty for my camper and I will be unlikely to buy another since the one I have now suits the missus and myself. I love to look but the thought of a loan gives me a headache!

Now, now Javi. Sort of like someone buying a 5lb. lead weight for their line to fish when all they needed was 3/8oz. - why?

Or someone trying to plug a 6" hole with a 3/4" plug

The difference in cost is really negligible and you never have to worry about having enough truck again.
