Before you pull the trigger on that unit, at least call these people (easy to talk to and quite knowledgeable) and ask what they recommend. Your problem of course lies with the auto-load leveling and they may have an answer for that.

I've had very positive experience with etrailer for some small items and they seem to have pretty much everything related to towing. Will definitely get an opinion from them.

When I got into serious cycling 13 years ago I was appalled at the price of a good bike so was shopping for the lowest price but my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) who had been a long time Ironman triathlete advised me that the relationship with the local independent bike shop would be far more valuable than the extra $$ to buy from them. She was right (and usually still is) as I've rolled my that bike in many times since and said "can you take a look at this" and had them fix/adjust/advise realtime. Robby's is like that for me when it comes to trailers and towing.

Would agree with Jim and Danny's statements. My experience is you get what you pay for. Think about the cost and extrapolate that over the time that you'll use it and the cost is not that bad.

To me, it's like insurance and peace of mind that I've done everything possible to ensure the safety of my family and other motorist. I couldn't live with myself if someone was Hurt or worse because I didn't spend the extra $500 or so to get a decent hitch (the weakest link) after spending six figures to buy a truck and trailer. Just doesn't make sense to me but that's me. YMMV

I too am partial to the Equalizer - which can be had for the $700 range:

My decision may end up being no decision as I have the best of what is available which may not be the ultimate "best" solution although Robby's seems to think it will make a big difference over what I have. I'll ask him if he has any source of Equalizers but even if he does $550 versus $1275 has to be a factor to consider.

Don't go with the Equalizer for 1275 - that's too much. They may have a source for them. They shouldn't run much more than 700-750 I would think.

I have the Curt 1000/10K W/D. No issues on my Passport. Does very well on the highway with cross winds and larger vehicles passing by. A lower rated hitch wasn't nearly as stable. Levels nicely as well. Yes, my hitch is overrated for the trailer (rather be over than too close to under). Danny - yeah, I think I can see your point about the detents. A larger or longer trailer may not tow as well with a detent type.
