NE Connecticut to Williamsburg VA

Howdy folks,

We're heading down to Williamsburg VA in early April from the northeast corner of CT. Specifically, just off of I-395. We are planning to bypass the GW bridge by crossing over the Tappan-Zee but we are a bit uncertain about the best route beyond the bridge. Not a big fan of I-95 but I also don't want to make this a 12 hour drive.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. We will be traveling in our F-350 hauling a 33ft 5th wheel.

Thanks all,

Tom

When we go that route we end up taking 78. The problem with that is that for Williamsburg you have to end up going back east right around DC which is a challenge in itself. If you take 78 it would add an hour. The other option is to time your crossing of the GW and bit the bullet for 95.

We usually go further so would end up staying around (distance wise) around Baltimore/DC for a night. Last year stayed at a great harvest host winery site on Chesapeake bay. Williamsburg probably you wouldn't want to stop.

I’m originally from the New Haven area. I live in Virginia Beach. I’ve pulled my camper to CT twice. Both times I used the Tappan Zee bridge both ways.

Once on the NJ side I took 287 to the NJTP. I cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge and then take Delaware 1 to US 13 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. At that point I’m home. For you, continue south on 13 to I64. Depending on your max height (and traffic) you go 64 West (if not too tall for the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel or if not rush hour) to Williamsburg. I believe the max height is 13’ 6”. If too tall or if traffic at the HRBT is clogged, take 13 to I64 East, and then to I664 North and across the Monitor Merrimack Bridge Tunnel to I64 West to Williamsburg.

You can’t avoid tunnels down here, so make sure your propane is off (or turn it off at the required inspection stations before each tunnel and turn it back on at the other side). I’d turn it off before the CBBT, and leave it off until Williamsburg.

There are 2 ways to get to Williamsburg from the north. Neither route will avoid traffic. I have traveled to the Williamsburg and Hampton Roads area many times. From your departure point I'd take US1 in Delware as Marinerjor descibed. It's a very scenic drive and seeing the engineering marvel of the bridge/tunnels is impressive. Be aware those tunnels are single lane, 2 way traffic, one bore hole only. So if driving thru a tunnel with oncomming traffic freaks you out then go down I95 to 64.

If you like all things military, the Hampten Roads are is chocked full of it. At the souther tunnel north bound tunnel is a rest area with truck/RV parking. There's a amphibian assult base there and I've seen them often. I've seen carriers and escorts leave the area with full escorts, missile cruissers, etc. Also Oceana Naval Air Station is in Virginia Beach so a variety of fighter jets are commonplace in the air.

I live next door to Oceana. The sound of freedom is overrated.

Although, watching the Blue Angels fly overhead while floating in the pool is a nice touch.

BTW, the only tunnel with two-way traffic is the CBBT. And they’re working on changing that. All the rest (HRBT, Downtown, Midtown, and MMBT) are two lanes each way.

Thank you all for the help. We plan to leave around 1:00 am to get there around noontime while factoring a couple breaks on the way. Hoping that the early morning will help us avoid some traffic. Plus we are traveling on Saturday on the trip down and the trip home.

We are only 12'6" so I think we should be good in terms of height.

Greatly appreciated,

Tom
