Ford F350 6.7

Was looking at a 2019 F350 Crew cab XLT 6.7 dually but it has 3.55 gears. Looking for anybody that has this set up towing a 11K or more fifth wheel for some feed but on how it tows uphill and all around towing?

Thanks

I don't have one, but with the HP/Torque and the transmission having more than just 4 speeds, I bet it would do just fine.

I have an 2017 F250 6.7 Powerstroke, with 3.55 gears, towing a 7800 pound travel trailer. So it is not exactly the same as what you are asking about but the same engine and gear ratio. My towing experience has been very good. The power and fuel economy have been very good. I get 10-12 mpg while towing and I can go as fast as I want up any hill. I have towed up some very steep grades and in the mountains, there is plenty of power. Also, the exhaust brake works very well to control the speed when you are going downhill.

Ford has optioned two rear end ratios for their 6.7L diesel since, at least 2011. Those two ratios are 3.31 and 3.55. Both are rated with the same towing capacities (in 2015 and 2020 literature) with either rear end ratio. Those two ratio choices are the ONLY ones available in the F250/F350 diesel SRW models. The 3.73 is only available in the gas engine SRW models. It is available in the DRW models, but that's a "different horse" situation.

There is no "functional limitation" with either ratio choice. As I understand it, the 3.31 is more suitable for fuel economy in sustained long distance driving while the 3.55 ratio is more suitable for sustained "stop and go driving". As for towing, either is equally suitable for all towing within the capacity limitations as indicated in the Ford literature.

There's no "functional limitation" as long as your conventional trailer or fifth wheel total weight, king pin weight and frontal area are within the prescribed limits.

As stated previously, with the amount of torque any of the "modern diesels" produce and the "improved transmission capabilities" that are engineered into today's trucks from all three manufacturers, for "generalized RV towing" it's more a "my dad always said" or "I feel most comfortable with" type decisions rather than "this one is better in all situations" kind of choice....

Now, with gasoline engines, rear end ratio is much more important when using the truck in "heavy towing situations". Not so much with today's diesels.....

As an example, I have the 3.31 ratio in my 2015 SuperDuty diesel. I regularly run in 6th gear on "flat highways" (1500 RPM) and run in 5th gear on "hilly highways" (1650 RPM)….. If I had the 3.55 ratio, I'd be at 1650 RPM in 6th gear and around 2000 RPM in 5th gear. Functionally, either tows well with minimal "downshifting or hunting" for gear changes.

It won’t break a sweat at 11k, would likely do well up to 16k, after that accelerating would likely suffer. It would be nice to have 3.73’s or so.
Just for reference our old 2001 Ram 2500 5 speed manual had 3.55’s and did fine with a 12,500# 5er in tow.

Ford currently does not offer the 3.73 ratio with any diesel engine. The 3.73 ratio is only available with gas engine trucks in the F250/F350 SRW and the F350 DRW models. The 3.73 is not offered in any of the diesel equipped F350 DRW and the F450 models. The only available axles in the SuperDuty line equipped with diesel engines are the 3.31, 3.55, 4.10 or 4.30 ratio. The 3.73 was dropped from the diesel line in 2011 (If I remember correctly).

It would be nice to know. Are you currently using a TV/RV to compare to the new truck? To just answer your question, the 3:55 gears will work in that truck pulling an RV up to it's listed limits will be amazing if you have any older TV.

My comparison, same TT as I recall loaded wt is in the 7200 lbs, Truck cargo not weighted on a scale, I guess at 1,000 lbs of fuel, tents, wood stove etc.
2002 7.3 CC long bed 4x4 3:73 rear end last year climbed a major grade on I-84 near La Grande Or. Speed at top of hill was 50-55 mph. HP 235? and torque 500?
2013 6.7 CC long bed 4x4 3:55 rear end same TT same load last month top of same climb was at 70mph. It could have went even faster. HP 400 torque 800?
Buddy with his 2018 6.7 CC long Bed 3:55 he thinks his TH is 12,000 to 13,000 lbs on same trip. He was following and telling me to speed up. HP 440 torque 925?
I was raised with gas engines and the best towing rear end was 4:10. These newer trucks broke that glass ceiling many years ago by massive power increases and better transmissions.

I pull our Impact 361 with a 2017 F350 4x4 CC w/ 3:31 gears effortlessly. Approximate weight 16k. You won’t have any issues pulling your 5er.
I used to pull my impact with a 2016 F350 with 3:55 gears, but it was totaled & I replaced it with my 2017. I don’t notice any difference between the two when towing.

502Monte, I have a 2019 F350 6.7 DRW with 3.55 gear ratio and tow an Alpine 3400 which has a dry weight of 12000 lbs (if I remember correctly think it is 14000 loaded). This truck hauls that trailer like its not even there. I need a pretty good hill to even drop it out of 6 gear while towing my trailer. Let me know if you have any other question be glad to answer best I can.

Thanks for all the replies just wanted to here some feedback from actual owners of trucks with the same set up towing, I know Ford says the truck will pull 27K but wanted to here it from truck owner not truck salesman.

We have a 2019 F-350 DRW with the 3.55, and had a 2016 F-350 SRW with a 3.55. Both performed great when towing our Cougar 28RDB around. But, for what you asking about, our camper is only about 10,000 lbs though.

The 2016 took it both to New York State and out west a few times. And last summer we took the new 2019 and same camper out west for 2 weeks, spending time around western Montana, Yellowstone, Tetons, Big Horns (going up and down Hwy 14 both sides), and all the way in-between out there and home. Both trucks have done great in the mountains. The only reason we traded in our 2016 for the DRW was because we may be getting a heavier fifth wheel in a couple of years. Otherwise, we would still have the 2016 since I loved it and it towed great.

These trucks are amazing! You won't be disappointed. My 2011 6.7 dually with the 3:73 gears rarely shifts down to 5th gear on grades while towing my 17K pound toy hauler.

The 6.7 Ford diesel with 3.55's will easily pull 11K pounds.
I have a 2011 6.7 with 3.31's and just went from NJ to LA and back pulling a 5th wheel about 11k pounds fully loaded. And the 2019 has more hp and torque than mine. Plus, the 3.55's should do even better.
No Problem.

I have the 2019 F-350 crew cab 4X4. Towing is real easy up and down. I use the Anderson hitch, but that should not make any difference

Out west just back from a trip cresting a 8000 foot mountain pass.. I have a f350 2017 platinum 4x4 SRW
Towing 14k
Truck never skipped a beat, downshifted and maintained speed during the climb..
The tranny and exhaust brake were amazing on the down hill side..

Don’t look back. There is so much power with these newer trucks. Gears are almost meaningless unless you tow very heavy all the time and need lower gears.

2020 come with 3:31 standard I believe

We recently completed a 21 day, 6200 mile trip through the mid west. I can honestly say that I barely noticed the camper when driving whether on flat, or mountainous roads. Best tow vehicle I’ve ever had. Would definitely recommend!
