To Great Smokies from NJ

Hello,

We're looking to load up our trailer and head that way around May and are looking for advice on where to stay and where to avoid. General knowledge and insight about the area is also appreciated. We have friends in Winston Salem we plan to visit on the way down.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

We are going down in June to The Foothills Campground. We love it, because it is a small campground.

I would avoid Gatlinburg, for camping anyway. We enjoy the Townsend area..."The quiet side of the Smokies". I've stayed in several campgrounds around Townsend, but next time I will be at Up the Creek RV Camp.

But if you have kids you may want one of the campgrounds in Townsend for tubing, etc.
I would also recommend Tanglewood Park in Clemmons NC just south of Winston Salem. Insist on a level site when you reserve because some are not. Otherwise it's a beautiful park with much more than the RV park. http://rvtanglewood.com/

Undecided as to where to stay. I'm hoping for some insight to making that decision. Somewhere near the park without the tourist element. We're interested in the scenery and history of the area.

No kids to entertain.

We stayed at COE the campground is Bandits Roost right outside of Gatlinburg. For us that was a perfect located for the best riding . Bandits Roost is dry camping but the area is huge with trees everywhere. With the national parks pass its half price.

After enjoying the many campgrounds around Gatlinburg, we found the High Country in NC. We like Ashville and drove the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mount Mitchell, and to Boone, NC, and Todd. In this area, there is a lot less traffic.

The campground we like best in Gatlinburg Green Briar Campground. We like the city of Boone and have stayed at Flintlock Campground, or stay at a small campground called Lynnville Falls Campground. We went to N Georgia and stayed near Helen and the city of Cleveland.

We normally go every summer and fall to see the Appalachian Mountains!

There is a Bandits Roost COE in North Carolina near Wilkesboro. According to Google map it's 174 miles from Gatlinburg. Has water and electric hook ups. Closed in winter like many COE campgrounds. Is this the same one?

Whoops I stayed at Elk Mont its National park 6 miles from Gatlinburg in Tennessee . I’m thinking there wasn’t a COE we stayed that didn’t have electric.

Yeah I've stayed at Elkmont. Cool campground right by the river. Works good for the Bigfoot cabover in spring or fall. Last time I was there we got some snow. Last April maybe. Nice trails next to the river for fishing. That is until I heard about a bear mauling upstream. Packing 357 then on.
We were in Charlotte this November and I thought about coming back home through NC and stopping at Bandits Roost, until I read it closes for winter.
