Electrical issue at cigarette lighter

Hi all,

Let me start by saying I am a bit of a novice when it comes to electrical. I can use a meter and understand the basics, but I am far from an expert.

So, I have two cigarette lighter charges in my unit. I bought it used and based on the appearance they were installed by the prior owner. They have worked fine for the last 1.5 years.

Then....

I decided to add a sting of LED's under the awning. To bring power to them I tapped into the power and ground wire that goes to one of the cigarette lighters. Ran the wires through the wall, hooked everything up, lights worked great.

This weekend took the rig out. When I plugged in the charge to charge my phone, nothing. Took out the meter and measured 12.7dcv so all good. Took the charger out to my truck and the charger would not work their either. I have another charger in the truck, plugged it in and worked fine. Took it into the trailer, plugged it in and it did not work. Back out to the truck, and now that charger does not work.

When I got home I took an older charger we con't use anymore and tried it. Same thing, the outlet in the trailer blew the charger.

The LED's continue to work.

My guess is I connected to something in the LED strip that is not a ground, but I really have no idea. Any thoughts on next steps is very appreciated. I can take pictures and measure away if there are some smart folks to help me out.

Thanks in advance! Rod

Sounds to me like you may have reversed the polarity on the socket. The center should be positive and the metal surrounding it should be negative.

Or the LEDs are hooked up backwards.
