High Voltage

My BIL just moved in and a professional electrician put in his meter loop and connections. Problem is, I just ran a buried feeder line to his shop and was surprised to see 132VAC at the main lug. Went to his pole and sure enough 132V not only on the shop breaker but the breaker for his RV and going to his house. There were no lower voltages. He will be calling Bandera Electric Coop tomorrow to get them to see if they can resolve this issue but any idea why this would happen?

Was this a new transformer and feed from the utility line? Could be bad transformer or utility company used the wrong taps on the transformer.

The national standard voltage supplied to customers in the US is 120 to 125 volts AC + or - 5%, which translates to 113 v on the low side and 132 v on the high side. When you start applying load to the service, that voltage will drop some, so as long as you are within that range, you are good.

Their house is fully connected with A/C running and all normal house stuff. The RV is plugged into 30A service and don't think much was running. No load on the new line I installed yesterday. They told my BIL that they could look on a computer from BEC central and they saw 124V. My multimeter doesn't lie.

BTW: Don't know if they had a new transformer installed... Don't know if it shared or they are on one solo.

The utility probably has a voltage regulation device on their line that is not working properly causing the primary voltage to be too high. Occasionally the regulators which look at incoming and outgoing voltage and adjust to compensate to keep the output voltage correct get stuck or just stop working. Transformers are tested in the factories to verify winding ratios are correct, so it's not likely to be the pole bolted transformer. 132 volts is the high end of the voltage that the EMS devices protect against, so 133 would shut them down.

The link below would indicate 132vac is too high as I always thought it was. I could not find a reference to +/- 5% for a 120-125 volt range, only 120vac.

https://www.spgsamerica.com/informat...voltage-ranges

George tell BEC to send a service man out and find that 124vac in the field with a meter.

This place belongs to my BIL & sis. They told my BIL & Sis this morning on the phone everything looked peachy and if they send someone out and find it is 124VAC as they claim, my BIL & sis would have to pay a trip charge and that kind of scared them off so not sure what they are going to do. I suspect I will take my meter into their home next time I go over and let them look at my digital multimeter's reading. I have several so may take two. (As it said on the latrine wall next to the toilet paper holder "Why take 2 when 1 will do?")

Have you checked your meter at your house and seen what voltage it’s showing? Also if the batteries are low it can act funny with some meters.. in the meantime he can use a 200 foot extension cord to step the voltage down a bit lol…just kiddin. Maybe you could preface it as a safety issue and not a service call and tell them you shouldn’t have to pay for a safety check…tell them to send someone when in the area so it’s not a special trip if that doesn’t work…lastly slip the tech a $20 bill and he will likely not charge you
My utility company who I used to work for years ago would come out anywhere at anytime if you said you smelled gas…I imagine they do the same with electric safety issues.

Electric Coop? Ours in NM comes out if we tell them you suspect a problem - with no charge - and our place is quite a ways out of town in the forest.

Have them tell them the "lights sort of flickered then got bright - that's when the TV and computer started smoking.....I think our electricity is messed up and might catch the house on fire. I'd hate for BEC to have to foot the bill for something like that......."

thats ok....depending on the type of test meter and confiusions over RMS and peak etc... the spec is 120v from the poco and my good meter reads 121.5 at the moment and I have seen north of 128...it does vary.

you say the whole house it this way? then fret not cuz surely outlet to outlet you switched 'poles'. if you had one pole well over 120 and 1 well under, I would say call a 'trician cuz your neutral bond to ground is bad, but I dont think you need to worry. any dc stuff things in the camper are on the back end of gizmos that regulate it to what it needs. (most usually run stable 80v-150v for 12vdc output.) USB phone chargers, cheap chinese ones, have cheap chinese zener diodes that may fail and melt the phone so check out the 5v system.
