Why did Keystone put cranking batteries in my travel trailer?

I just opened the battery boxes on my new Passport, and I see the batteries are the cheap Deka Marine/RV cranking batteries.
I'm sure the dealer knows more than I do about batteries, so why would they do that? Cranking batteries aren't made for this application. These batteries should have been deep cycle.

I am sure it was a mistake by the dealer. As far as I know the trailers are not shipped with house batteries from the factory.

Go back & have them replace them with group 27 or 31s, whichever fits the boxes best. Yes they do know better but figured you don't.

It's not the size that bothers me. It's the wrong type of battery.
Sure both have the threaded terminals, but that's not what makes a deep cycle.
If you were to have both a cranking and deep cycle battery, of the same size, in front of you, the deep cycle weighs substantially more. About 1/3 more.
A maintenance free cranking battery won't do the job.

From what I have seen, most RVs come from the factory with Marine/rv batteries. They are considered a hybrid battery and cost less than a deep cycle. That said, they don’t work well powering an RV that’s not hooked up to shore power. They are fine if all you do is go to a state park with hookups a couple times a year. They will fail just after a couple years, just long enough for your warranty to end.

There a few things that are quickly thrown out when buying an RV and replaced with a better product, mattresses, tires and batteries.

I've not ever seen a new trailer come to the customer with true deep cycle batteries unless special ordered. The "go to" standard battery placement is with the hybrid batteries (2) which work fine unless you intend to do a lot of boondocking.

Yup!! Only time I’ve seen a battery included was when the unit came with inverter and residential fridge.

Yep, what they^^^^said. It is all on the dealer, and no, Keystone CAN'T call them on the phone and demand they do it differently.

Page 49 of the 2019 version of the Keystone RV Owner's Manual:
"The 12 Volt system can be powered in three different ways: a RV battery (not included by Keystone), the converter changing 120V AC to 12V DC or by the tow vehicle’s 12 Volt system."

The battery is provided by the dealer (as is the "free propane") and is included in the price of the trailer that you negotiate. If they can "get you out the door with a $30 GP24 battery the profit margin increases. If they "have to supply two GP31 deep cycle batteries", the profit margin goes down significantly....

At any rate, it's the dealer, not Keystone that "made a profit from you" with that battery.....

Darn dealers!!!!!

If you get 2 years out of the battery you're 2 years down the road. I've had my hybrids 4 years now. I've gotten my monies worth out of them. Besides, I do not believe it states anywhere that a true deep cycle battery is included.

Well, my experience with two 12 volt batteries in parallel, or two 6 volts in series is that one will go bad before the other. Then you're faced with replacing both or putting a new one with the old one.

My next will be a single 4D deep cycle battery. It has more amp hours than two 27s. Sure, I'll have to mount the bigger box, and have help to pick the battery up, but life will be simpler.

Did you happen to check the specifications on that battery?????

On the fourth line from the bottom, the specs list: CCA 1450

In your first post, you inferred that you don't want a "hybrid battery" and that all with a CCA listing are "hybrid"....

Just sayin'

Unless you have a residential refrigerator most all come with a single group 24 rv/marine battery.

I put the G24 on my old trailer and put my four GC2 in the new trailer.

I'm not sure I see any benefit from going with that battery. It's AGM; to some a benefit to others not so much so. It weighs 117lbs. There is no way I'm trying to horse that thing around and get it into position under the nose of my trailer. 2 SRM 27s will do about the same thing and not put you in the hospital trying to extend your arms 3' in front of you holding 117lbs trying to negotiate a battery rack. To each his own but I have NO problems buying 2 batteries at a time if for nothing more than the convenience.

If you have a 2 battery system, either 6 or 12 volt, you should always replace both at the same time with identical batteries or yes you will have issues of the older weaker battery drawing the newer stronger one down not the other way round.

Then a bigger single makes more sense.

Thanks JRTJH , but I was using that as an example of what's available if you think out of the box.
Yes, there are 4G batteries available that aren't of the cheaper "hybrid" variety.

Pay $278 for a single battery (so you won't have to replace two $89 batteries at the same time)... Seems like a great idea to me......

Sounds like your mind is made up to go "out of the box" and use a system seldom used by RV'ers. You'll be "walking on shifting sands where few have been. All I can say is, Good Luck with your innovations and I hope they work better for you than the "older, tried and proven" pair of GC2's. Let us know how it works out for you.......
