I'm not a fan of caulking the bottom area either. As noted, there is a lip behind there, and it seems like it would take a lot of effort for water to wick up there. Also, if any water does get back there (from leak around faucet, for example), it would get trapped back there and increase the likelihood of some mildew issues. I do, however, caulk the very top edge of the shower stall. Just my thoughts.
