RamBox 5er

OK here’s my situation, I have a 2015 Ram 2500 with the RAMBOX and a B&W gooseneck turnover ball, I bought a 5er less than a month ago, we replaced the original king box for a goose box. When it was installed we all found out that it will not allow me to make a complete turn because the RAMBOX sides are about 3” wider than a normal bed. So the RV Dealership then sold us a B&W companion with a Reece sidewinder king box. We thought great then when we got home from Fl where we bought the 5er I saw a warning tag on the companion DO NOT use the sidewinder with the companion. I’m asking anybody that has the RamBox and B&W gooseneck turnover ball what are you using to tow your 5er with. Any help and advice will be much appreciated.

Thank You

I don't have a Rambox, but with my Andersen set up and OEM pin box I have about 8-10" of clearance from the bed on a tight turn, and you can also adjust the Andersen up another 3-4" (I have mine on the lowest setting) which would give more clearance.

No, do you have the original to put back on? I’m not sure if the sidewinder is recommended for the Andersen?

They do not want the sidewinder used with any gooseneck attachments. I used to have one and Reese and B&W told me that they feel the offset caused by the side wonder is too much leverage for the single attachment point the goose neck provides. I used to use a Curt X5 and a Reese slider before going to the Andersen. If you have the original pin box still the Curt X5 and a conventional hitch may work for you. Or any other rail type attachment hitch once you get a gooseneck to rail adapter.

The dealership who sold me the companion and the sidewinder saw the errors of their ways after my wife gave them the what for. So they are replacing the companion with the B&W patriot, and of course paying for everything. I have to use the sidewinder because the RAMBOX won’t let the RV do a complete turn without it hitting the sides. The sidewinder brings the pivot point back towards the tailgate and allow me to make a complete turn. So all and all everything is going to work out so yea me.

Rambox and Fifth Wheel??

Hi ron130fe. How is that tow setup working out for you? I have a 2017 Ram 2500 with Rambox. Looking to get a Cougar Half Ton Fifth Wheel 32BHS. Do you by any chance have any pictures of your setup that you can show me?

Yes, it took 2 months the learn about this setup with RamBox the dealerships NO NOTHING about this. You HAVE to use a Reece sidewinder or a slider with your coupler because you cannot make a 90 degree turn. As much as I love my RamBox this is the one and only drawback that I have found. Do you have the puck system? I’m not sure how to post pictures.

Thanks for your input and I do agree on the dealers. I do not currently have a puck system so I will need to get that installed. Some follow up questions.

1. Did you have to make any other medications to the trailer besides adding the sidewinder hitch?
2. What model of hitch did you get for your truck and why?
3. Is your truck 4X4 and does the trailer ride pretty level with your setup?
4. Have you bumped into any clearance issues when driving on uneven terrain?

Sorry for so many questions. Trying to cover all of my bases here.

First the puck system is a manufactured system I don’t think they are aftermarket.
I didn’t make any mods except having the rails installed for the patriot hitch.
I got the 16K B&W Patriot because those two systems work together plus that’s what B&W told me to get.
Mine is 4x4 and it rides pretty level but I think I need to lower the hitch a hole or two.
The sidewinder pivots on a Teflon pad and it squeaks and pops a lot when turning.
I don’t take it on any but paved roads so IDK about uneven clearances issues but I have 11” between RV and bed rails.
I hope I answered your questions.
Now for the real stuff
I have never had a 5th wheel before and I’ll never have another one
The whole hitch situation I’m in has been a huge pain in my ***.
It takes two people to hook it up because the sidewinder uses a wedge and you have to be perfectly lined up to hook up.
Because of the RamBox you can only use the sidewinder and patriot system
We tried a goosebox because we have the turnover ball that’s when found out about the turning issue.
I’m trying to sell my 5er and go back to a TT. That was a whole better system IMO.
I hope this helps and gives you some good info if you know how to post pictures let me know and I’ll get you some.

Just a follow up B&W makes a slider but I think it’s a bigger pain than it’s worth.

I am pretty sure they don’t recommend using a sidewinder with a hitch that goes in your turnover ball spot either. I have a turnover ball and had to get a curt X5 to get rails in my truck. Then I had a standard slider. In the end I went Andersen but I don’t think that will help with the ram box.
