Surge protection portable or hard wire?

With all the discussion here on surge protectors I'm starting to consider one. o
On my walk around the CG loop this AM I spotted a half dozen portable ones easily.

My question is which way should I go, portable or hard wired? I'm figuring either type from a manufacturer has the same electronics for a given model. However is see Progressive's hardwire model is about $70 cheaper. i was a little surprised by that.

Personal choice. I just bought a hard wired with remote panel for mine. Prying eyes don't need to know everything I have. Portable is probably easier, but since I have the room and know how, the hard wired with remote is just as easy.

Second what Chuskter said. I installed a progressive 50 amp hardwired in the basement with remote display. Easy peasy - unless you're fighting with a demon red wasp like I did. I've had two portable units. One grew legs and walked off. I'm passing the remaining one onto my nephew.

Let me start by saying there is way too much information on this forum pertaining to this topic for me to even attempt to summarize here. Do a search on the forum say on EMS or surge and I am assured that after reading through all the posts ..... all your questions will be answered. If you run out of popcorn there is a recent thread on recommended popcorn brands

Keep in mind this is a Chevy/Ford/Ram type question, so PICK ONE!!! After researching these posts you will conclude there are pro and con for all different types and MFG

Let me put it this way, the worse decision you can make regarding this topic is waiting and not getting one That is a Fact

I chose to install the hardwired version, so I could have the remote display to keep an eye on things.

One thing the portable would provide would be the ability to site surf, if the current site has power issues you can take the portable unit to other sites and check out their pedestals, without dragging your camper around.

As long as you have one, of either type, you will be better off.

^^^ Agree with all of the above. With the hardwired type you get a display module in your unit so no need to go outside to see what the problem was.

I went the hard wired with remote route... my remote in in the basement beside the auto level panel.... I figured that I didn't want a blinking green light in the living area... and I would have that door open during the setup anyway...

I got a portable one and as you can see it is locked with chain. It actually is double locked first on chain/wire then pole/wire..If sneaky fingers happen to have bolt cutters, it's theirs...just pray that i am not around!

I followed PARAPTOR's advice and searched for surge protectors. Some of the stories now make me afraid to plug into an outlet. I'm leaning to hardwire but I really don't have a good spot to mount a remote display head and a unit with a built in display would be hidden and not easily observable by opening a closet door.

Here's how I mounted my remote display. When the door is closed it's covered.
I used 2 sided velcro tape.

I mounted mine on the pantry wall, there is a chase way there and lots of other wires go through it

Something like in a cabinet would work for the display. The actual unit would go on the floor in back of the converter. Also planning on putting a detachable power cord on.

Ordered and received a hard wired 30 amp EMS. Progressive forgot to pack the screw set and sent that last Thursday and arrived today. Now to find time to install it.

Installed a hard wired progressive in our last fifth wheel and then went with a portable one -50 Amp Portable EMS with Integrated Display . The hard wired would not work with my Yamaha 4000 watt generator. Sold the hard wired without a problem.

Are you implying the Hard-wired EMS would not work with your generator, but the portable EMS does.

I am curious about this...

Don't use the portable when I use the generator - 4000W Yamaha or 2000W Honda. Not as concerned with power surges or issues.

Do not re-call has been over a year since I replaced the hard wired with the portable.

This was Progressive's reply to me:
We have had so many customers with the Yamaha generator with this same problem. With a Honda you will not have that problem, but I think Yamaha over rates their unit and it cannot do the job.
