inverter/ charger

Hi all,

First post.

"12 Copper Canyon"

I want to upgrade the Power Converter with one that has a "Smart Charger". I have 2 batteries but they are at opposite end from the shore power line. Looks like I have room there to do the replacement.

Question: That makes the smart charging unit 28' from the batteries - seems like a long way. Could I put a smart charge unit at the front of the trailer and hook directly to the batteries?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Bill

All a smart charger has is a float mode that comes on with a trickle as needed. I would check the documentation that came with your converter to see if it has "float mode". If so, there's no need to spend the $$$.

X 2 ... What Bob said. Most new converters are three stage. Mine is on shore power 24/7 except for traveling and have never over charged a battery.

I upgraded to a four-stage charger: Progressive Dynamics PD4655. Mostly because I'm a gadget geek, but also because WFCO doesn't have the best track record.

The fourth stage is "EQUALIZATION Mode 14.4 Volts - Every 21 hours for a period of 15 minutes prevents battery stratification & sulfating - the leading cause of battery failure."

To respond to the original question, some people just buy very nice chargers for when their trailer is in storage. Maybe that's an option for you. If not, then the unit I have doesn't have a separate smart charge component you can relocate.

Sulfacating is what I am concerned about - from the posts below
