Springs during my PM.

I was checking my springs and shackles this morning and oiling all the wear areas. I found some of the springs shifted 1/4. I pounded them back in place with my 6 lb brass hammer. I got into a place I shouldn't have in CO and bumped a curve hard. I'm thinking someone on the forums mentioned that happening when up grading to a 14 ply tire. I haven't yet done this but oiling the springs with WD 40 . Is there any benefit?

According to the Dexter manual, your u-bolts, which connect the axle to the spring packs, must have the nuts torqued to between 45 to 70 lb ft, if they are 1/2 inch. Quite a few owners have discovered loose nuts, and this could be the cause of spring leaf movement. If you are 'oiling' suspension components, this must mean you do not have wet bolts with bronze bushings in your suspension. This is a good upgrade, which will keep things together much longer. The units that do not come with the wet bolts usually have plastic bushings and thinner shackles, which tend to wear much faster than the upgraded parts.

That was me that hit a curb hard and lost two tires. Thankfully no other damage.

Check the U-bolt torque. When I did the wet bolt mod found that ours were virtually finger tight. I replaced them with 9/16" U-bolt versions and torqued them to 70 lb ft.

Dave the spring bolts where loose. I turned each bolt over thinking they would wear on the other side. There was no apparent wear and I have around 20 k on the rv. Ill use the straight track system till I see some sign of wear, then Ill replace everything with wet bolt.

roadglide, Howdy;

I'd stay away from any oil or grease between the leaves, it will only attract
dirt and what-not from the road surface. The military gave up on WD-40 for
firearms maintenance back in the 80's due to it had a tendency to attract
moisture. I'd stick with proper torque and perhaps convert to a wet bolt
system when you return.
Happy Motoring !
