Camco wave 8 or Mr. Buddy

Been having a discussion with someone on this. I have a Mr buddy that is 9000 btu's on high. He has The wave 8 iwhich s 8,000. We both use campers for hunting in cold weather.

He says Wave 8 is way safer and leaves his on during the night. Says he wouldn't leave a Mr Buddy on during the night. I don't leave my Mr buddy on at night but wouldn't leave a wave 8 on overnight either. Not because I'm worried about it, just prefer not to.

He's way more knowledgeable about these things than me and I've been considering getting a wave 8 but think it's probably a waste of money for me since I have and use the Mr. Buddy.

Both are catalytic heaters and both have low-oxygen shutoff systems. The biggest difference I see is cost. I have used a Mr. Buddy and a Coleman BlackCat. Never had an issue with either and at a fraction of the cost of the Wave 8 I wouldn’t be interested in trying that one

Two other things to keep in mind is that any unvented heater with a catalyst does need to have the catalyst replaced every couple of years. Also remember that the main byproduct of these heaters is water vapor, a lot of it. In the winter, that means condensation and potentially mold issues.

Hi,

I have been running a Mr. Buddy for 10yrs now. Thankfully I have never had a problem.

I have ran it at night when asleep on those extremely cold nites at elk camp. I keep a window cracked in 1 end of the RV and a roof vent cracked at the other end. I have also installed extra smoke/CO detectors.... 3 total in my short 21ft TT.

Like Lee says make sure if you sleep with it running that you have CO2 monitor, different than low oxygen, for either machine. Leaving open windows enough to be safe isn't warm any more....at least to me

Mr. Heater Buddy heaters are NOT catalytic heaters. The Olympic wave heaters are catalytic heaters. Either one will do the job but a catalytic heater MIGHT have a little cleaner combustion byproduct.

I wasn't aware that the catalyst needed to be replaced in these so thank you. I believe there used to be a Wave model that was direct vented but was discontinued?
I wouldn't trust the low oxygen cutoff on any of these heaters. The CO will put you out likely before the O2 gets low enough to stop them.
