The highlighted sentence says it all. So many trying to pull something they shouldn't be pulling. "It's a 2500, it can pull it!"

I'm sure the newer gas engines are adequate in most situations. My rant is mostly directed at ignorant people with too much trailer for a given truck and those that don't follow the rules of the road.

I applaud those who come here seeking information on how to do this right. But there are a few that believe they already know everything and won't listen to reason from the many experienced folks here offering solid advice.

I’m hoping the 10 speed with the 6.6 gas will be a good combo like the 7.3 and 10 speed have been. Most of the complaints I’ve read about the current 6.6 have been the lack of gears with the 6 speed.

If you are going to stick with gas stick with the 29MBS. If you do the gas option get the "highest" ratio gear option they offer. The engine, specs and 10 speed are cool but if you kill it with a 3.42? or some low ratio option you might as well not have the engine/tranny combo.

Diesel (since this seems to now have turned into that debate)? One has to KNOW what they are pulling, where they are going and the benefits of a diesel...or not. At almost $2 a gallon more than gas in many places, and a 10k up front cost "to have it" one has to weigh the benefits carefully. If you don't keep a vehicle for more than 200k miles (at the price points of engine and fuel make that 500k) you're wasting your money unless you NEED that power to pull what you have. JMO

My reason for asking the question I did is I’m trying to buy a truck/camper combo that will fit my needs to the point I won’t want to trade either anytime soon. I think I’ve made my mind up on the 29MBS. I AM still between the 2500/3500 and honestly still debating gas or diesel but I do realize that’s a rabbit hole. As I said before, this is all new territory to me and I really don’t want to buy another truck after I buy this next one. Thanks for all the input on my question. It’s greatly appreciated!
We can sure help you spend your money!
Spend some time in the Cougar before you think about buying it. We love rear kitchen units, but that bunk room creates a real pinch point between the fireplace,TV and the couch. That Montana is a lot more roomy for being less than 5’ longer.
The Cougar can easily be towed and carried with a gas TV, with a 10 speed and 3.73 or 4.10 rear gear.

The Montana at 16,000# GVWR will not be a comfortable tow with a gas engine. It may be more than a SRW diesel can carry, depends how heavy you keep your TV.
While many say tow rating is meaningless understand the a gas TV will likely run out of tow rating before exceeding payload, while a diesel will run out of payload before getting to tow rating.

Word of advice, you have a trailer now that you don’t like, so why did you buy it?
Keep in mind that in truth the Montana will cost you about $20k more as you will really want a diesel to pull it.

You have some tough choices to make, think long term.

It’s a bit of a long story. Bought the one I have now because I had a diesel gladiator and needed to find a trailer to fit in its specs. It would pull it, but the trailer pushed that truck all over. Bought the f-150 which does pull it better, but after taking some longer trips in the current camper we realized we wanted something bigger. F-150 doesn’t have enough payload to pull much bigger of a trailer. So trying to find the camper and truck combo that will work best.

Money not being an issue, i have learned that I would prefer to have more than less. Not just for the sake of spending money mind you though. My F-350 dually is the XL model with cloth seats and not a lot of frills.

However, when replacing my wife's vehicle, I could have gone with a Suburban (grand kid's hauler) but I got her an Escalade. Just because she's worth it!

And my toy (the CTS V) sits in the garage for the time being while I decide how much horsepower I want to put under the hood.

We're all different. You do you, I do me. Life is short. Live well.

I love it when someone asks for advice and gets a response from someone bragging about how great they are while adding zero insight to the question that was posed. We are all proud of you, thanks for sharing.

One thing I learned that could save thousands. Don't buy your truck based on the current trailer, but on your next trailer. The odds are good that some day circumstances will change and you'll want to trade. If you get a little more truck now, it's smart. Plus, you can't go wrong having a little bigger truck. Also, the diesel will have a lot better and quicker resale if you do decide to trade truck later. Just saying.

Kind of depends on the OP as far as buying for a future RV purchase in mind. I buy used and at my age likely this will be my last RV as the prices of new RVs are crazy and I am cheap and hope to die with a $0 on the balance sheet. I actually like owning an old camper as I don't get upset with dings and it is sorted out by and large and doesn't have any electronic gizmory.

Glad I made your day! Everyone needs a hero, right? Seriously, if you can afford an RV, do it all the right way. Get what you need, not what you think will get you by.

This I agree with 100%! That’s how we ended up going from a 2016 F-350 SRW to the exact same truck, just adding 2 tires….a 2019 F-350 DRW. Would have saved us a few years of payments if we had fully thought that one through instead of telling each other “nah, we would never want a larger/ heavier camper”. Ha!
