Depending on where we are going, we shoot for about 300 miles/day. Of course, if we're stopping along the way for sightseeing then this could be considerably less.
As others have noted, we call our envisioned next stop to make a reservation when we first hit the road. On rare occasions when our first choice doesn't work out (i.e., we can't get a reservation) we "look around" that area to see what else is available. The DW likes using the phone app RV Parky, but I usually have a list pre-made of our stop-over points and campgrounds in that vicinity.
We don't drive over 55 when towing, so if it's a straight shot (i.e., no sightseeing stop) the actual average mph might be around 45-50, which includes stops for gas, rest and food, so we're on the road 7+ hours. I prefer the back roads versus the interstate; drivers are much less crazy, the scenery is better, and one never knows what touristy attraction one will randomly run across.
And as others have said, I prefer not to drive at night; arriving at a campground in the daylight makes it much easier to park.
