Aftermarket Electric Tongue Jack

Hello All! My manual tongue jack has seen better days and needs to be replaced. Thinking of going electric. I have a 27' 2017 Outback. Dry weight 5600, loaded up 6500 max.

Any recommendations on electric jacks?

Here is the OEM jack that came with my Cougar. I got a new one due to "Operator Error" The price was right and shipping was quick.

Husky makes a nice one as does Lippert.

My last trailer came with an LCI electric tongue jack - 3500 lb. I believe. It fried because the design allowed water to seep through the grommet on the top of the head. Replaced it with a Stromberg Carlson 5k lb. jack. Worked fine but it was very slow. I think Lippert has changed the grommet design on their jack and I've heard lots of good things about the Husky - they just weren't available when mine died and had to be replaced.

Mine came with a LCI, always sounded strained and gave up after a short time. Replaced under warranty and went out shortly afterward. I replaced it with a Husky 4500 with a remote. Still going strong, no regrets.

My used Husky on our old trailer sure sounded like it was a better unit than the one on our new Bullet, not sure the brand. Ill be going with Husky when it fails.

There was a recall on the LCI jack. Maybe your dealer didn’t let you know. Water under the bridge now that you have a new fiver.

Hi chuckster57,

Would you please provide more info on the recall.

Our 2014 22RBPR has an LCI tongue jack and there is a rubber cap on the top that I guess is for manual operation.

I have not used the jack since our last camping trip, last year, but the camper is parked under a cover... hoping that has limited water intrusion.

Thanks,

-Brian

Not now. We were on our departure day from FL (last paid day) and the jack just didn't work. Pulled the grommet and the little tray with the board was full of water. Pulled out the tool to manually elevate the jack and the nut disintegrated inside the socket....like mush. Asked the owner of the RV park (our friends) to let us stay another night to repair it, ran 1 1/2hrs (one way) to get the new jack (didn't want another Lippert, had some names I never heard of so settled on a Stromberg Carlson - which I knew from telecom days...nothing to do with RVs). Used the bottle jacks to support the trailer and replaced it....and got to leave one day late! I had no time to think about recalls....but it would have been nice if not for the compressed timeline - thanks.

A bucket over the jack head prevents water intrusion

A bucket, some sort of cover, prayer etc. prevents water intrusion. I expect that the manufacturer makes it waterproof if in fact it should have been. I did buy a canvas cover for the 2nd unit; eliminated that worry with a 5th wheel.

Been a while but I think it was for the “smart jack”. I’m sure you could check the Lippert website.

Tonque jack

10 years ago I bought a electric tongue jack off E-bay which was the cheapest I found. Used it for 5 years with no problems, then sold the trailer and bought new one which has a Lippert jack. I kept both covered because I have read some horror stories about water getting and them not working. The E-bay one I paid less than $80 for it, but may be more now. Most jacks are made in China anyway, so it doesnt matter which you buy, just buy one that handles the tongue weight plus a little extra.

Replaced the stock electric tongue jack with a Husky Brute 4500 and have never regretted it. Also it is less expensive than most of the other jacks with a higher capacity.

I recently had an LCI Smart Jack quit because of water intrusion. They were kind enough to extend the warranty. They sent a replacement. I will now keep it covered with a cinch type bag. I don’t think any of them are water proof. At least the manual override worked and not bad..

I use a Husky 4500 on my Passport. It was given to me as a gift and the second time out with it I destroyed it by pulling out of the campsite without retracting it. I called Husky customer service to see if I could get parts to repair it. I admitted the fault was entirely mine and expected to pay for the parts, however I was told to destroy the control head and send them pictures of the destruction to prove it couldn't be reused. They sent me a brand new jack no charge. The best customer service experience I have ever had. I also bought a ten dollar cover on Amazon to keep the sun and rain off the head.

Two trailers ago I swapped out the manual jack for a power jack (I don't remember the brand). I loved having the ease of pushing a switch instead of cranking up and down several times to hook and unhook the WDH. But be aware that the downside of the power jack is the real possibility of not being able to open your truck's tailgate.

I also agree that bigger is better. If 3500 will do the job, 4500 will do the job better!
