I have to say that one thing I enjoy about this site is the variety and number of opinions, experiences and advice.

I've read all of your input and that along with our own thoughts, and those voices in my head, have decided to "wing it" on our shorter closer to home adventures. We will test drive the concept of no reservations and a just do it, kind of trip to see how it works for us. Sorta' like traveling training wheels.

For our longer more involved trips we will still make reservations. Also, we would have travel partners, and I can see where the winging it method may be a bit problematic. One party may want to do one thing and the other another.

However, we may end up with a hybrid style trip and wing it on the way home. Who knows maybe one party will get sick of the other party and go another way home.

The destinations and lengths of our longer trips are still TBD. But I think we are jelling on Oregon - ID - UT -Western Colorado - UT - Nevada - Home. Maybe a BLM night or two in NV.

I've found that the biggest hurdle to overcome is "fear of the unknown"... There's a certain level of insecurity or maybe fear about being left out that goes along with "winging it"... Many people just don't feel comfortable if they don't have everything settled before they start. Others, me included, have a more "devil may care, it'll work out somehow" feeling about it. Nice part is, you have your house behind you should you find things don't work out one night on the trip.... That "security of always having the trailer to rely on for a place to cook and sleep" sort of takes the edge off the "fear of the unknown" for us.

Everyone's comfort level is different, so our approach may or may not work for you and your travel companions.... What works for you is the way you need to plan your trips. GOOD LUCK !!!!!
