Thinking about going to the badlands/Yellowstone this summer. Campgrounds? Advice?

We've got a site reserved at Cedar Pass Campground near the east entrance of the badlands this June. Flat and sparse like a lot of campgrounds out there. Not going all the way to Yellowstone though. Spending the week at Sylvan Lake in the Black Hills. Then the DW and my sister are going to a quilt show in Rapid City.

Let me throw this wet blanket if you will: After 15 minutes driving slowly through Badlands National Park you will wish you opted for the quilt show. And no, this is not an exaggeration.

Yeap, after you see the albino buffalo, the Indian curio store, the two historical markers, you'll be "ready to escape to Wall Drugs for a long overdue taste of reality.....

I'd recommend after seeing the Badlands, stay a while in Custer State Park. Really nice campground at Stockade Lake North. Lots of wildlife close by and very central to Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood etc. Definitely spend an evening driving the wildlife road. https://www.keystoneforums.com/forum...hp?albumid=775

If I remember “cave of the winds” is there. The tour is well worth it.

Yeah, I wouldn't call the badlands a destination vacation by any means. Nice diversion after driving across the prairie on the freeway all day I suppose. For us it's just a convenient stopover so we can get to our main destination during the day instead of arriving late in the evening. As far as their quilt show goes, the BIL has a full taproom setup in his basement so I might be otherwise occupied.

Park the trailer, drive through the Badlands, spend a day at Wall Drug then take off. Its neat to see but that's about it.

There is as Minute Man silo museum nearby. Didn't see it but would have liked to.

Several years ago I had a ridiculous amount of hotel points so we decided to drive out to Colorado to see my DW sister & BIL and use the points for free stays instead of dragging the camper. We did all the touristy stops out there including Sturgis, Deadwood, Mt Rushmore, Custer State Park, Sitting Bull Monument, Etc.

I agree the Badlands are great if you are into that. DW and I enjoyed driving thru and seeing the colors of the rocks and how the shadows changed the looks. We exited the Badlands on some back road (don't recall the route) and were amused at all the dirt roads labeled "1st Ave", "2nd street" etc. We drove for a good 20 min. and not a car in sight (we were there in Nov.). There was a sign on one dirt road indicating an Indian Reservation. I said let's go see so turned off onto the dirt road and headed for this escarpment about 2 miles away. After driving at a very slow speed dodging literally thousands of prairie dog holes and enjoying watching the little rodents looking about we crested the hill and saw...nothing but prairie out to the horizon.

So turning about and heading back to the main highway the 30 min or so drive back we never saw a single vehicle go down the main road Visual for miles on either side of the flat, treeless terrain. You could have had a picnic in the middle of that road without issue. We finally reached the paved road and I stopped and waited. The DW asked what was I waiting on? I said to her, "I'm waiting for you to tell me it's clear on your side".

Fortunately for her we were driving across country so she had a change of clothing in the luggage in the back of the Durango.

There's a winery in Keystone with wine tasting.
Badlands are ok just don't take the gravel road to the right at the west side.

OOH! Harsh! When we were there the temperatures were bitterly cold (this was late middle of May) and the spring rains kept coming - but let up for a few hours the one day we were there and we made the circuit from the east gate to the Wall exit. It was stunningly different and worth the detour we made from MN.

We stayed at the Badlands Motel & Campground, just past the park's campground on the south side of the park, east entrance. Half the campground was flooded out at that time. The park's campground was high and dry, but we had made reservations months before - so who knew?

Three cheers on this recommendation. Ditto on Custer State Park.

There are actually three sites associated with the Minuteman 2 complex: the museum (where you can find out about where to go for the other two sites), the silo (which anyone can view) and the control center (which you need to make reservations at least 24 hours in advance, via the Park Service web site). All are very interesting. A book on the topic of nuclear-tipped ICBMs and related delivery systems is Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety by
Eric Schlosser (Penguin Press, 2013). There was a NOVA special on the just the Damascus Accident part of the book, but the book is much better and more detailed.

You gotta hit Jewel Cave National monument . One of the longest caves in the world. Well worth the visit. Oh, and it's an elevator trip over 300' down.

We went to Yellowstone 2 years ago and it's awesome. We stayed in the park and I'd highly recommend it as it greatly decreases your time driving. That said it's all dry camping so you have to have a good battery and generator or solar. We stayed in bridge Bay and Madison campground. Of the two Madison was nicer overall .. many of the spots at bridge Bay were in a big field. We got lucky at bridge Bay with a gorgeous spot though overlooking the lake but where they put you is luck of the draw.
