Yep, he dropped it and wanted it back. Poor snake was caught in the middle; wrapping himself around her arm trying to anchor himself (they can wrap your arm pretty tight) so the hawk couldn't get him, her flailing her arms and the poor hawk just wanting his dinner back that looked like she was trying to steal.
I've seen hawks drop things and watched them flying with a snake but never drop a snake. Thankfully it was her arm and not her head, those talons are long and sharp. When puppy was a baby I made a sock toy to play with her in the back yard. The yard is covered in pecan trees other than an open area where we were playing. I was throwing it for her, waving it over my head to get her attention etc. DW was on the porch and I was waving it over my head when a big red tailed hawk just came swooping in for that toy out of the blue (literally). Missed the toy, whacked me in the head knocking my hat off and leaving a cut across my forehead. Big bird....but he didn't get the toy!
