Seems there is now a "soft start" gizmo that doesn't require opening up your A/C(s) and installing but plugs into the pedestal. Not sure if you can use an EMS in conjunction but seems like a lot less work than installing under the A/C shroud. This is the SoftStartUP description: the SoftStartUP also includes surge protection and a power monitoring app." Not sure if it would replace and EMS or install in conjunction with and EMS... Regular $899 now $599 (gag).

This was in the article you mentioned:

Could be an option if you need surge protection and soft starting.
