Backup camera.

Our 2022 Montana is prewired for a backup camera. Does it have to be the Furrion than it’s made for, or can you use any camera? The Furrion is kind of spendy at the dealer and I was wondering if it’s worth it, or if another brand might be better.

The prewire is nothing more then a little 12 volt female connector inside of the plastic housing..I went with haloview. You can purchase everything on Amazon or their website. They have adapters to mount right up to the furrian mount

Haloview here also...I liked the fact I could mount a signal booster near the front of my rig. No issues with lag or picture quality.

Roper, Would like to point out that the TireMinder is a TPMS and not a backup camera.

I got tired of the poor resolution and signal loss from my OEM Furrion camera system. I bought a Vision Works system from Techno RV. I got a Black Friday deal price I think was $319 or so - not what shows in this screen shot. I ordered 5” screen (same size as my Furrion) and a Furrion mount and adapter. The camera is a Sony HD camera. My rig does not have side view cameras and I did not want to add them, but I might add them someday. The monitor has split screen capabilities. Go to their website and watch his review and installation videos. I hope to install mine today.

I have the Furrion S Vision with the backup and side cameras. We bought it as neophytes with our 31ft trailer off amazon and then reinstalled on out 37ft trailer in September. It has performed exceptionally for the entire time that we have had it.

My wife never sleeps when being a passenger and literally sits with the screen on her lap. When driving, I *never* use the cameras and drive with mirrors. I've always have pulled trailers this way and find cameras distracting. But it is my wife's security blanket and it does help as when I want to move into the travel lane in a tight situation I have an accurate check on distance.

When this thing has come in handy and worth every penny:

  • Two times we have been sent the wrong way by gps and stuck in a situation where we had to backup a long distance with not much wiggle room.
  • Almost every time we backup/position the trailer. I do use the back camera.... Although you can use cell phones (in most places). The microphone has become our go to way of communicating as it is rare that we have problems getting into position on the first try.
Rarely use the side cameras. The one "best buy" that I've found is that 2x I've ordered the dummy cover for the side marker lights/cameras. Once when we traded in our first trailer and before we put our trailer into storage (so we don't leave cameras that can easily be removed). Both times, the part number for dummy covers is *actually* the entire side marker light with the dummy cover for $5.95!

LINK

Although I'm not going to carry these in my spare parts with me, I have extra marker lights for when these get broken.

Which model of Haloview did you buy. My trailer is 36ft with that plus the truck I want to make sure I get a unit that will have no distance issues.

VisionWorks HD - WOW

I installed the VisionWorks system this weekend. All I can say is WOW what a difference. Very easy install.

I took the Furrion camera off, and it felt like it weighed less than a pack of gum. The Sony camera feels like a cup of coffee in a heavy mug (sorry to get soooo technical). I had two issues during the pairing that turned out not to be issues
.
The video from TechnoRV did not show the pairing process. I followed the written instructions. In the final step - it starts a 20 second countdown - which is normal. I thought it meant the pairing did not work - but it did work! Secondly the monitor has built in speaker (some systems include sound and a microphone on the camera - mine does not). The speaker was turned up all the way from the factory test and was emitting an electronic sound very much like an old fax machine. I called VisionWorks tech support and they said the sound is normal - just turn the volume down/off.

I bought the 5" screen monitor and the picture is incredible. I suppose I will simply throw my Furrion camera+monitor in the trash. My garage is already full of stuff like this "Maybe I should keep it just in case". Nope.

Should have included....
My FW is 33' and there is several extra feet of cable for the range extender coiled on my roof so I think there should be plenty of cable for yours.

Without going back to research the forum, it seems I remember a couple of members who were looking for a replacement monitor for theirs with a cracked or broken screen. If you're just going to throw yours away, it may be just what someone else on the forum is despirately looking to find....

John - I thought about it, but I live way out in the boonies. It’s a 25 minute one way trip to the post office. There is no easy way for me to send it somewhere, and even if someone from the Austin area wanted it - it’s a long strange trip to find me. I hate being a grumpy old man about it - but if someone PMs me in the next couple of days…maybe.

I live in Medina County and my post office is 27 miles away. I know what you mean but fortunately I have weekly picks by FedEx for my business shipping. Can't understand why you put Austin in your profile because I would put most anything besides that place if I lived near another town. Not a fan i guess of Cali-east. Years ago I lived in Leander when it was out in the country.

Not a fan of Austin either but nobody knows where Granger is...hence the sig says “in the sticks near Austin”. Austin has been a good place to make a living in commercial construction since we got here (1984) But we moved north to Williamson County in’88 (Georgetown) And out to the sticks when the kids got out of school...and thanks to covid i have not had to drive into that hell hole for the past two years as i can work from home.

When we lived in Leander, rode out to the Cotton-Country Club a couple times to listen to the tunes. I had forgotten about Granger since it has been over 25 years ago.

Idon't bother with any of that. I simply use a wifi action camera set to car mode. When I put the vehicle in reverse it automatically turns on and sends a signal. I just use my phone or tablet for a monitor. Very high resolution and cheap- $29 at Menards.

I know this is a little off track but.... has anyone used their backup camera as part of a dash cam? And if so, which model of dash cam are you using? I'm convinced of the need for one after watching hours of footage. Its unbelievable the number of rude, impatient, wreckless and downright dangerous drivers are out there. But I have also witnessed this as well first hand everyday at work. And many have no sense of accountability. They'll smash into you and just take off. Or worse, and try to scam you.
